I'm Jeremy Kenton the coronavirus is
0:05
headlining all health news today as it
0:08
has been for the last few weeks but
0:10
especially in the last week and with
0:13
7711 confirmed cases in China and with
0:17
the death to all told standing at 170
0:20
now the youngest of the people that have
0:22
died was 48 years of age and the oldest
0:25
eighty-nine but remember that if we put
0:28
this in perspective one has to remember
0:30
that flu deaths throughout the world
0:32
last year peaked 500,000
0:35
so although terribly distressing
0:39
obviously for those families who've been
0:41
affected this is very low incidence by
0:44
comparison with a normal flu pandemic
0:47
which occurs every year at this time of
0:49
year anyway production of face masks in
0:52
China has increased and they're now
0:54
producing over a hundred and fifty
0:56
million face masks per day
1:00
viral experts say that face masks are
1:03
relatively ineffective with the corona
1:08
virus and that hand-washing is
1:11
recommended regular hand washing and
1:13
that if you want to be absolutely sure
1:15
you need a full respirator and not just
1:18
a face mask and on the basis that the
1:20
average person touches their face up to
1:22
20 times per hour one of the major
1:26
issues here is in terms of contact so
1:29
the proper needs that the condition when
1:34
it's asymptomatic in other words when
1:37
there are no symptoms is when it's at
1:40
its most contagious so you may be
1:43
talking to somebody who doesn't know
1:46
that they've got the condition and
1:47
that's when they're at the most
1:48
infectious stage and other health news
1:51
the World Health Organization has stated
1:53
that there is evidence to suggest that
1:56
vaping has significant effects on a
1:59
growing fetus and as such they're
2:02
voicing their concerns with regard to
2:04
whether or not vaping should be banned
2:05
and it has already been banned and the
2:07
use of electronic cigarettes have been
2:09
banned in certain countries such as the
2:11
Philippines
2:12
and that there are potential effects for
2:18
non-smokers through the passive effects
2:20
of some of the chemicals which are burnt
2:22
using the electronic cigarette process
