COVID-19 stats MONDAY 10 Aug and false claims about Spain returning to lockdown next 18 September
Jan 13, 2025
Coronavirus statistics update and analysis for Monday, 10th August.
Monday saw 1,486 new COVID-19 infections by PCR in a 24-hour period, continuing more than a week of daily infections in the thousands.
In today’s video we also tackle news reports that Spain will go back into lockdown on 18th September – a claim that appears fake both by source and quality of the written text.

this is bay radio
0:03
hello this is joshua parfitt the digital
0:06
editor for
0:06
bay radio and i'm here in studio 2 today
0:09
for a new series we are running
0:10
covering the daily updates of
0:12
coronavirus statistics
0:13
and providing some brief analysis when
0:15
the statistics come out between 5 and 7
0:17
pm
0:18
every monday to friday so let's take a
0:19
quick look at today's statistics
0:21
and then in the analysis section we
0:23
should have a look at an article that
0:24
has been circulating on social media and
0:26
our websites
0:27
over the last couple of days claiming
0:28
that spain will go into a lockdown on
0:31
september the 18th let's go here we are
0:33
looking at the update
0:35
for today monday the 10th of august it
0:38
is showing that in the last 24 hours
0:40
1 486 people were confirmed covid19
0:44
positive
0:45
by pcr test however as the spanish
0:48
government does not update over the
0:49
weekend
0:50
there have been 8618 people
0:54
who confirmed covid19 positive by pcr
0:57
test in all of the spanish territory
0:59
if we scroll further down to have a look
1:01
at the graphs we can see
1:03
that after the downward trend when we
1:05
went into lockdown now after coming out
1:07
of lockdown at the end of june
1:08
there has been a spike in cases again
1:11
now the 1 000
1:12
cases per 24 hour period was quite a
1:15
landmark number but if we look back at
1:16
the statistics we can even see that
1:18
at the end of july cases were registered
1:21
at 2 000 3000 4000 and even touching
1:25
nearly five thousand per day
1:26
this is because the spanish government
1:28
does not always get its statistics on
1:29
time so it claims
1:31
which means it continually updates its
1:33
statistics so when we look back in time
1:34
we can actually see
1:35
that infections are rounding about the 4
1:38
000 number
1:40
this is quite a scary number as if we go
1:41
back to march the 14th the number of
1:43
contagions
1:44
that pushed the government into calling
1:46
this the unprecedented state of alarm
1:48
was just 4200 whereas currently we can
1:51
see that in the last 14 days
1:53
42 000 people have tested positive by
1:56
pcr test
1:57
but does this mean that spain is going
2:00
back into lockdown
2:01
a number of you may have read and have
2:03
been commenting on an article appeared
2:04
in a number of
2:05
primary english language publications
2:07
over the last weekend
2:09
claiming that spain will go back into a
2:10
lockdown on friday
2:12
the 18th of september 2020.
2:15
we've been looking into this today so
2:17
let's walk you through the article and
2:18
see what we've found
2:20
now the first interesting thing is in uh
2:22
paragraph two of this article
2:24
which claims that congress ministers
2:26
have made this announcement about uh
2:28
september the 18th being the day for
2:30
another lockdown
2:31
but what is interesting is that a
2:33
minister means
2:35
a person who has become part of the the
2:37
congresso de putados as the houses of
2:39
parliament are called in spanish and
2:41
then have formed part of the government
2:43
now it's very rare for government
2:44
ministers to actually speak to the press
2:46
let alone a foreign language publication
2:47
in their country which already rings
2:49
some alarm bells and what's also
2:50
interesting is that this this paragraph
2:53
uh claims that spain is fighting a
2:55
losing battle against the pandemic
2:57
now it strikes us as very strange that
2:59
uh a minister
3:00
a member of the of the ruling coalition
3:02
in spain they have
3:03
currently a coalition would say that
3:05
their country is fighting a losing
3:06
battle now that already strikes us as
3:08
very strange
3:09
uh furthermore if we go into paragraph
3:11
three let's talk about a three-phase
3:12
release
3:13
claiming that we were in a three-phase
3:15
lockdown now if
3:16
many people cast their minds back to
3:18
when we were coming out of lockdown and
3:19
going through the uh
3:20
the de-escalation procedures you
3:22
remember that there was a facility
3:24
unofficial
3:26
which is actually uh five uh phases so
3:29
we don't know where they got this
3:30
three-phase release from furthermore the
3:32
article claims in
3:34
in paragraph four that spain has a has a
3:36
border with italy which
3:37
uh as you can see in this in this
3:39
picture um
3:41
as far as we are aware spain only has
3:43
only has land borders with andorra
3:45
france portugal and morocco
3:48
not to forget gibraltar what's more
3:51
interesting if you go
3:52
down a bit further is that there's now
3:54
talk of members of congress
3:56
now it will be very important for this
3:57
article to to distinguish between
3:59
members of congress and ministers
4:01
a member of congress could be a member
4:02
of the opposition and now that
4:04
may sound a bit more likely that someone
4:05
of the opposition wants to leak
4:07
something about the government out to
4:08
the press
4:09
so already we can see there are some
4:10
discrepancies in the article that uh
4:13
that doubts the authenticity of it and
4:15
then we go back into talking about
4:16
ministers
4:17
and also this uh source claims we the
4:19
spanish government so perhaps we are
4:20
talking about ministers
4:22
but as we've said it already strikes us
4:23
it's very strange that a minister will
4:25
talk to a foreign language publication
4:26
furthermore there are only a handful of
4:28
ministers so it's very strange that this
4:29
person
4:30
or persons haven't been named bay radio
4:33
has also been on the phone today with
4:34
the
4:35
ministerio del interior as you can see
4:38
in this
4:38
email here now what we were told by them
4:41
is that um
4:42
of course the minister of the interior
4:44
of the interior ministry of the home
4:45
office in
4:46
in the uk are not able by themselves to
4:48
implement a quarantine a quarantine
4:50
as we have already seen requires the the
4:52
full approval of of parliament or
4:54
congress congreso
4:55
in in our case in spain and it's worth
4:58
bearing in mind that that spain went
5:00
through
5:00
six extensions of the state of alarm all
5:03
of which needed parliamentary approval
5:04
and the last one the sixth one of which
5:06
only actually made uh it was just just
5:08
one vote above an absolute
5:10
majority with the with the popular party
5:11
the pepe and vox the um the far-right
5:15
uh party as well totally in opposition
5:17
to the state of alam
5:19
which should also be worth bearing in
5:20
mind that it it would be totally highly
5:22
and very unlikely
5:24
for pedro sanchez from the pesoe
5:27
with the podemos and escher only that
5:29
coalition
5:30
to unilaterally declare a state of
5:32
confinement after the terrible attacks
5:35
and the difficulty they had passing
5:36
through the the extensions through
5:38
parliament
5:38
so these make us think also that it's
5:40
highly unlikely that
5:42
such a date has been set and that such a
5:43
blanket lockdown
5:45
will be put into effect we've also been
5:47
in touch with some fact-checking sites
5:49
such as
5:50
malita puntos you can find the link in
5:52
the description below and this one is uh
5:54
neutral
5:54
which is another fact-checking site now
5:56
this site as well they've actually also
5:58
spoken to
5:59
montclair which is the spanish
6:02
equivalent of number 10
6:03
and also the press team there have
6:05
refuted these claims and said that they
6:07
they don't know anything about it so
6:09
there we go another fact-checking site
6:10
isn't sure about the
6:11
claims made in this article that said
6:13
the numbers that we are experiencing
6:15
which are way higher than we saw back at
6:17
the beginning of march when the state of
6:18
line was first called into
6:20
effect do raise the questions are we
6:22
experiencing a second wave
6:24
and is another lockdown indeed necessary
6:26
uh you may have seen in the news a lot
6:28
a gentleman called fernando simon who's
6:30
head of the spanish center for
6:32
coordination of health emergencies and
6:35
alerts
6:35
he has outlined that there will be three
6:37
main factors to consider before a
6:39
lockdown would be implemented the first
6:40
one is
6:42
is if we are witnessing uncontrolled
6:43
community infections
6:45
the second one is if an outbreak covers
6:47
enough ground to put the health of an
6:48
entire territory at risk
6:50
and the third one is if an autonomous
6:52
region cannot control its own
6:54
outbreaks now none of these are factual
6:57
none of these are based on numbers so
6:58
they're all quite
6:59
open to interpretation but this is how
7:00
things are in spain where they have 17
7:02
different autonomous communities
7:03
and a central government in madrid so if
7:06
we cast our minds back to a few weeks
7:07
ago when
7:08
when tortana and murphy went into
7:09
lockdown they went into lockdown after
7:11
just 55 cases
7:13
now of course in places like aragon even
7:16
in just the last
7:17
24 hours we've seen cases up to 348 in
7:20
aragon
7:20
we've seen up to 224 in madrid we've
7:23
seen 342 in the
7:24
in in paisbasco and 146 in nevada
7:30
so these numbers are way higher than
7:31
what what happened in
7:33
in total however this again was a case
7:35
of community infections
7:37
what happened in tortana was that that
7:39
an infected worker at
7:41
at a pub then went on to infect around
7:43
55 people
7:44
however the the government of murichia
7:46
were very quick to act
7:48
they locked down the territory back into
7:50
phase one
7:51
and tested over 300 people who were
7:53
known to have gone to the bar over a
7:54
two-day period
7:56
now in aranda del duero they were locked
7:59
down after 199 cases which is almost
8:02
quadruple what happened in total
8:04
and here we can see where where problems
8:06
in interpretation happen
8:07
because whereas tortana locked down
8:09
after 55 cases
8:11
and it has a population of 31 000 in
8:13
aranda del duero it got locked down
8:15
after 199 cases
8:17
and it has a similar population as
8:18
tortano with 32 000 people
8:20
so we can already see here how the
8:21
autonomous governments are taking us
8:23
a different approach but what's
8:25
important in the eyes of fernando simon
8:26
and the central government
8:28
is how well do they contain the
8:29
outbreaks as we can see
8:31
from urthia and in tortana the cases
8:34
initially spiked to 136
8:36
and then went back down to 82 in a week
8:37
and the region is going to stay in the
8:39
lockdown
8:40
for one more week so if we're going to
8:42
think about lockdowns what the
8:43
government has been telling us
8:44
is that regions that have certain spikes
8:47
and outbreaks they are currently
8:49
more than 580 known in spain the
8:51
government will be watching how do those
8:53
regions control
8:54
those outbreaks if they start to balloon
8:56
and spike well out of control
8:58
then what would likely happen is is a
9:00
larger regional lockdown
9:02
but it doesn't mean to say that the
9:03
whole lot country shall be put
9:05
into confinement and especially not
9:07
without the
9:08
approval of congress and furthermore
9:10
definitely without any spanish
9:12
newspaper reporting on what has been
9:14
claimed by these
9:15
english-speaking sources this has been
