Do you really understand the Sabbath? What is it? What does it mean and are there different types of sabbaths? Before I explore the #Sabbath, let me introduce myself. I am Leroy Daley of Blogging About The Word. You can find me at www.atotheword.com. I utilize the Holy Bible as my sole authority for all my Bible studies. “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little” (Isaiah 28:10). Should We Go to Church on the Seventh Day the Sabbath of Our Lord? In its simplest form, the Sabbath is a time of rest. However, there are different sabbaths. First, there is the seventh day, this is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord God. Then, there is the sabbath of “rest onto you”. “And he said unto them, This is that which the Lord hath said, Tomorrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which ye will bake today, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning” (Exodus 16:23). The rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord, is fixed. It’s always the seventh day of the week. Because after six days the Lord ceased from His works. He rested on the seventh day. This is the “high day” that John speaks about. It’s important for a number of reasons. “The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away” (John 19:31). It is significant because of what the Lord did concerning the seventh day. “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made” (Genesis 2:2). • The Lord “rested”. • He “blessed” it. • He made it holy. Many people, Christians included, misinterpreted the Scripture quoted above. In this quotation “rested” is synonymous with “ended”. The Bible is not saying that after six days of creation the Lord was exhausted, so he “rested”. He’s not a man that He could become tired! Instead, it’s informing us that after six days of creation the Lord “finished”, “completed”, “ended” or “rested” from “all his works”. He stopped. We know the Lord in three ways: either as the Father (or the Creator), or as the Son of God, or as the Holy Ghost! Well, His role as “Father”/ Creator ended on the sixth day. That’s is the function of the Seventh Day. It reminds us that for six days the Lord created everything in the universe then He rested on the seventh. He will never create anything or any being again. That’s why the Bible says He rested from “all his works”. He’s done! His role as a Father or Creator is done. However, the Lord did another significant thing concerning the seventh day, for, He blessed it. “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it” (Exodus 20:11). This is the “only” day that He blesses. There was none before and there will be none after the seventh-day that the Lord blesses. Unlike all the other days, the Lord wants us to know how He feels about the seventh-day, so he blessed it. And to further impress upon us the importance of that day “unto the Lord” He “hallowed it”. Another name for “hallowed” is “sanctified”. He sanctified it. What does this mean? This means that He makes the seventh-day holy. “And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made” Genesis 2:3. Now, if it’s a day that the Lord uses to mark the completion of all His works; a day that He blesses, and one that He makes holy, we must take note. However, we should observe that even though the seventh day is such a “high day” the Lord never instructed Adam to observe it! And he never did! Why? Note too that none of the forefathers kept the sabbath. Not Adam nor his children, nor their children. Not Noah, nor his three sons nor their sons kept the sabbath. Neither Abram nor his sons, or their sons kept the Sabbath. Nobody kept the sabbath until Moses came .. Even if you are not an Israelite you should keep the seventh day holy because the Sabbath is for everyone! This Bible study answers the questions: Who Keeps the Sabbath and Why? Here is a great Study Bible: https://amzn.to/3N26cEo Support my efforts here on my Patreon Page:- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=68552167 Before I explore whom the sabbath is for, let me introduce myself. I am Leroy Daley of Blogging About The Word. You can find me at www.atotheword.com. On that website and on this channel, I teach Christians how to better understand their Bible. I utilize Bible studies to accomplish this. I teach using Scriptures, here a little, there a little, line upon line, precept upon precept. Precepts must be on equally relevant precepts or else we will have confusion and misinformation in the church. Read this Bible Study here: https://www.atotheword.com/bible-studies/is-the-sabbath-for-everyone-or-just-for-the-children-of-israel/ This week I will utilize the Bible to demonstrate who the Sabbath is for. If you stick with me to the end of this Bible study, I will provide a bonus just for you! Fifteen days of the second month after leaving Egypt the Lord instructed Moses (Exo 16). The instructions He gave to Moses are for the Children of Israel only and not for the entire world. Who Got the Sabbath? “And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying” (Exo 31:12). “Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you” (Exo 31: 13). Why Must the Jews Keep the Sabbath? “Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people” (Exo 31: 14). “Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant” (Exo 31: 16). “It is a sign between me and the children of Israel [forever]: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed” (Exo31: 17). “Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee” (Deut5:12). If you are not a Jew when and where in the Bible does the Lord command you to keep the sabbath? Recall, in my last Bible study, I told you that the Children of Israel were slaves in Egypt for 430 years. Consequently, they had to work every day for all those years. They didn’t have a choice. So, when the Lord delivered them, He, for the first time, instructed them via Moses to keep His Sabbath. “And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore, the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day” (Deut 5:15). The Children of Israel are a special nation of people to the Lord God. They are not like any other people, in the eyes of the Lord, on this planet earth. They are special. “For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?” (Deut 4:32). “Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?” (Deut 4: 33). “Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?” (Deut 4:34). “And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth” (Deut 28:1). I want us to take note, that the Lord instructions to the Nation of Israel, are not for everyone. For example, He tells them that they are “peculiar” to Him. Therefore, they shouldn’t eat any and anything. He chose their diet. These are some of the animals that they should eat Deuteronomy 14:1-4. However, the rest of the world the Lord gave no such instructions. “Ye shall not eat of anything that dieth of itself: thou shalt give it unto the stranger that is in thy gates, that he may eat it; or ....” (Deut 14: 21). Have you ever heard of the Sabbath of the eight-day? Here is a great Study Bible: https://amzn.to/3N26cEo Support my efforts here on my Patreon Page:- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=68552167 Last week and the week before, I defined the Sabbath, then I explained to whom the Lord gave it. I have also touched on the fact that there are other Sabbaths besides the seventh day. This week, I‘m exploring those other Sabbaths! But before I do so allow me to introduce myself. I’m Leroy Daley, of Blogging About The Word. My website is www.atotheword.com. On that website and on this channel, I teach Christians how to better understand their Bibles. To accomplish this, I utilize Bible Studies. In them, I make full use of relevant Scriptures to explain other Scriptures. I use them here a little, there a little, line upon line, precept upon precept. Precepts must be on other relevant and correct precepts or else we will have confusion and misinformation in the Church. Did you know that besides the seventh-day, the holy Sabbath of rest unto the Lord, there are other Sabbaths? These could happen on any day of the week except on the seventh day. Additionally, these are those which evolved into the Jew going to the synagogue on the Sabbath. Recall, the Sabbath, at first, was a day of rest. On that day the Jews would not leave their tents. Watch this video to the end and I shall give you a bonus. I will explain a feature of the Sabbath that will surprise you. It may even make you mad and angry with me, but it will be the truth! As I explained, in a previous Bible Study, there are two broad categories of the sabbath: “the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord” and “a sabbath of rest unto you” (Exodus 16:23; Leviticus 16:31). I have expounded the first, so today, I will explain the second, “a sabbath of rest unto you”. The Sabbath of the First Day “And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,” (Leviticus 23:23). “Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation” (Leviticus 23:24, 39). I bet you never heard of the Sabbath of the first day before. What’s a “holy convocation”? It’s a holy gathering, a meeting, or a coming together of holy people. This is the prelude to the Sabbath-day gathering in the synagogue. “Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord” (Leviticus 23:25). The Sabbath of the Eight Day You have seen that there is a Sabbath of the seventh-day, and one of the first day. Now, I present the Sabbath of the eighth day. “Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath” (Leviticus 23:39). The Sabbath of the Tenth Day? Therefore, there are sabbaths of the first, seventh, and eight-day. But wait, there is also the sabbath of the tenth day. “And the bullock for the sin offering, and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall one carry forth without the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung” (Leviticus 16:27). “And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp” (Leviticus 16:28). “And this shall be a statute [forever] unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you” (Leviticus 16:29). “For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the Lord” (Leviticus 16:30). “It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, [the seventh month, on the tenth day] and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute [forever]” (Leviticus 16:31). Note, this is a sabbath of rest unto you, meaning a rest day that the Children of Israel observe to remember their lack of rest in Egypt for four hundred thirty years. This rest is not unto the Lord but unto the people. Earlier, in a previous Bible Study, I told you that the Holy Bible is a Jewish book. I also explained that we cannot apply everything in to our lives because some things are only for the Children of Israel. However, we can and should accept, embrace, and adopt the things which have spiritual applications to our lives. Jesus and The Sabbath - What Did He Say About the Seventh Day? Here is a great Study Bible: https://amzn.to/3N26cEo Read this blog post here https://www.atotheword.com/bible-studies/jesus-and-the-sabbath-seventh-day/ In previous Bible studies, I have examined the nature of the Sabbath; who keeps it holy, and the existence of other Sabbaths besides the seventh-day. However, this week, I will investigate Jesus and the Sabbath! But before I do, allow me to introduce myself. I’m Leroy Daley, of www.atotheword.com. On that website and on this channel, I teach Christians how to better understand their Bibles. To accomplish this, I utilize Bible Studies. In them, I make full use of relevant Scriptures to explain other Scriptures. Did you know that Jesus Christ is the ultimate authority on the seventh-day, the holy Sabbath of rest unto the Lord? As such, whatever he informs us concerning the Sabbath is final. This means that his word on the Sabbath supersedes the Word that Moses Got from God for the Children of Israel. What did Jesus say about the Sabbath? Here are three things we could learn about the Sabbath from Jesus Christ. I Will Have Mercy on the Sabbath Day and Not Sacrifice “But if ye had known what this [means], I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless” (Matthew 12:7). The high priest enters the Tabernacle to offer sacrifices first for himself then for the people. Here Jesus compares the role of the high priest to his own, so he declares I will have mercy and not sacrifice. Consequently, Jesus is declaring that he will show mercy even on the Sabbath day! HOW? “And he saith unto them, is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? [T]o save life, or to kill? But they held their peace” (Mark 3:4). In other words, he was asking the Jews, is it ok to be merciful on the Sabbath day? Nevertheless, he uses examples that the Jewish people could relate to. Technically, Jesus says you guys are “hypocrites” because you show mercy to your animals on the Sabbath day but you don’t want me to demonstrate mercy to a human being on the same day! Jesus asked, “Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?” (Luke 13:15). Another example which demonstrates this is: Rhetorically, Jesus asked the Jews, “What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?” (Matthew 12:11). Of course, none of them could answer him. Jesus’ message on merciful is practical, relatable, and powerful! He says, if you could display mercy to an ox, ass, or a sheep, “How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days” (Matthew 12:12). Therefore, it is lawful to show mercy on the Sabbath day! Jesus says, “Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days” (Matthew 12:12). He says, as the Son of Man he will be merciful to our sins but he will not sacrifice. “For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day” (Matthew 12:8). Jesus says that he is not just Lord but he “is Lord even of the Sabbath day”. In other words, he says the Sabbath serves him, and not the other way around. “And he said unto them, “The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath” (Mark 2:27) Additionally, in the days of Jesus Christ, and in contemporary times, the temple is the focus of the Sabbath day. Thus, to educate the Jews and us, Jesus takes his argument of being merciful on the Sabbath day one step further. First, he makes a bold pronouncement, for he informs us that he’s Lord of the Sabbath too. Then, he informs us that he is “greater than the temple”. “But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple” (Matthew 12:6). Therefore, Jesus is greater than the Sabbath, for it was made for him, and he is also greater than the “temple” the focus of keeping the Sabbath holy. Conclusion Jesus teaches us three things concerning the Sabbath Day. First, he is greater than the temple. Second, he is merciful to others even on the Sabbath Day. Finally, the Sabbath Day serves him because it was only designed for him and not, he was designed for the Sabbath. With all these things in mind let's heed his call to us. Jesus pleads with us, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
