Then Hath God Also to the Gentiles Granted Repentance Unto Life? After Cornelious and his household had received the Word of God, the apostles and brethren in Judea were in amazement and asked each other, “Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life” Acts 11:18? Since the ascension of Christ into heaven, not much preaching had been done to the Gentiles by his disciples. With the solitary exception of Samaria, the disciples had been preaching to Jews only. Additionally, the Samaritans are part Jews. Last week, I showed how the Lord sent Simon Peter to preach to Cornelious and his household. They were all Gentiles! They received and believed the word that Peter preached and received the remission of sins. Then brethren in Judaea heard that they had received the Word of God. But under ordinary circumstances, you would have expected them to be happy for them. But happiness was the farthest thing from their hearts. This reaction is different from the one they exhibited when they heard that Samaria had received the Word of God. According to Doctor Luke, “Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John” (Acts 8:14). Keep in mind that they are part-Jews and not fully Gentiles. So, they sent assistance to Philip in the persons of apostles Peter and John. This tells us that they approved of them receiving the Word of God and that they were somewhat happy at their being saved. But how did they react when they heard that God had granted repentance to life to a Gentile Centurian (Cornelious) and his household and many of his close friends? They certainly didn’t display any signs of happiness and they sent no assistance to Peter! Apostle Luke tells us how they reacted! He says, “And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God” (Acts 11:1). “And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,” (Acts 11:2). Instead of rejoicing and giving God thanks that more people had entered into His kingdom, they were being religious! What did they argue with Peter about? “Saying, Thou wentest into men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them” (Acts 11:3). Could you see how religious these Christians were? Instead of them celebrating that others have repented and entered the Kingdom of God, they were concerned with traditions. The situation was so toxic that Peter had to supply a full explanation before they were appeased! “But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,” (Acts 11:4). “I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me” (Acts 11:5). In this Bible Study, I plan to reveal three essentials of salvation for everyone both Jews and Gentiles. The Lord sent his Son to the Jews, then His Son sent his disciples to the world. The Lord sent the same Word of God first to the Jews and those who received it experienced remission of sins. Then, He sent the identical Word to the Gentiles, (via Peter), and they who received are saved. Cornelious and his household were the first amongst the Gentiles to experience this. I differentiate them from the Samaritans that Apostle Philip preached to because they are part Jews. I did a Bible study on this and shall leave a link below this one to it! But Cornelius had no blood ties with Israel. He and his household and friends were Gentiles. Welcome To Our Book Of Acts Bible Study I have been traversing the Book of Acts using weekly Bible Studies. This week, I shall focus on Acts 10:34 to 48. In last week’s Bible Study, I show that Cornelious sent three of his men for Simon Peter and he came. Now that Simon Peter has come, let’s hear from Him the Word of God concerning Cornelious. “Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:” (Acts 10:34). What does Peter mean by “God is no respecter of persons”? In this context, this means that He doesn’t favor or prefer one person or people above another. Therefore, the thing that He has done for the Jews He did for the Gentiles. Peter explains further, “But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.” (Acts 10:35). Therefore, your nationality is of no importance to God. For any person, from any nation, who reveres Him and does righteous things God accepts him or her. Peter continues to preach to Cornelious and his family and friends. “The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)” (Acts 10:36). “That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;” (Acts 10:37). So, through Simon Peter, we are aware that God sent Jesus to preach peace to Israel. Additionally, He sent a word to them by Jesus Christ (Acts 10:36). Finally, we understand that word is, God “is Lord of all” (Acts 10:36). Next, Simon Peter revealed to Cornelious that “that word”, which the Lord sent, you “know”. Because it wasn’t done in secret for it was published in all the lands. Then, he gave an important timeline. He explained that the preaching that God is Lord began in Galilee, after the preaching of the baptism of repentance which John the Baptist preached. Peter continues, he informs Cornelius and us that God has sent Jesus to the Jews and that He has also empowered him. What are the three essentials of salvation?
