Today's scripture, James chapter 1 verse
0:18
12. It's all about the blessed man. The
0:21
blessed is the man that endureth
0:24
temptation.
0:27
For when he is tried, he shall receive
0:30
the crown of life that comes to us from
0:33
James chapter 1 verse 12. Now, my name
0:38
is Al Watkins and I'm mighty glad to be
0:40
here with you today and I hope that you
0:42
will listen and learn from the scripture
0:46
itself. Now, as we move forward in
0:49
today's Bible study, I want to let you
0:51
know I come from Wilmington, North
0:53
Carolina. I've been a pastor for nearly
0:55
35 years now. Uh, and I've really
0:57
enjoyed serving the Lord along the way
1:00
in many ways. Uh, I have, uh, done some
1:04
preaching. I've done some teaching. I've
1:06
done some singing. I've even done some
1:08
witnessing and a few other things along
1:11
the way hopefully to bring glory to my
1:14
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. But today,
1:17
I want to talk about the enduring
1:19
Christian. Uh, we go through things. We
1:22
have trials. We have tribulations just
1:24
like everybody else. Uh we don't live in
1:27
a perfect world. We do have the perfect
1:29
Lord, the perfect God, the perfect
1:31
Savior, but we don't live in a perfect
1:34
world. And we're not perfect beings, and
1:36
we will be one day, but we haven't quite
1:38
gotten there yet. So, as we move
1:40
forward, keep in mind exactly what the
1:43
Bible study is going to be about. Today
1:45
is about the blessed man that endureth
1:48
the trials and the temptations and the
1:51
things that will come to him or her in
1:54
this life today. The blessed endurance
1:58
that we read about in the Bible, we like
2:02
to think that everything is happy
2:03
golucky. It's uh easy and everything is
2:07
just hunky dory all the time. But that's
2:10
not it. God says he would walk with us
2:12
through our trials and through our
2:14
temptations. He will walk with us
2:16
through our downfalls and he will walk
2:19
with us through the glorious days too.
2:22
The word blessed that we read about in
2:24
the Bible simply means this being deeply
2:29
happy by being favored by God.
2:33
not in the sense of a worldly sense of
2:36
ease and comfort but rather in the
2:38
comfort of the spirituality of the
2:41
stability of being a good solid
2:44
Christian like God calls us to be. So
2:48
James speaks about life's hardships a
2:50
lot in his writings. He also talks about
2:53
persecutions, but he also speaks about
2:56
those inward struggles when we struggle
2:59
with ourselves as we try to walk with
3:02
perfect faith in following Christ. The
3:05
endurance is not a passive thing. The
3:08
endurance, the word in the Bible, is not
3:10
a passive thing, but rather it's an
3:12
active thing. In other words, a powerful
3:14
thing. Persevering in faith without
3:17
giving up on God. Think about that. A
3:20
lot of times we just say, "Well, you
3:22
know, whatever." Well, that's not so.
3:25
God is with us always and forever. And
3:29
so, think about this. To be with God is
3:32
also dependent upon God and his strength
3:34
to carry us through the life in which we
3:37
live. A good cross reference to this
3:39
passage of scripture we find in James is
3:42
another passage of scripture we find in
3:44
Matthew 5:e 10.
3:50
This may actively be something sometimes
3:53
that we find ourselves uh in trouble
3:55
about as far as our strength and our
3:58
faith and our strength in our walk and
4:00
our strength in our believing and God
4:03
being with us. We find in Matthew 5
4:07
verse 10, blessed are they which are
4:11
persecuted for righteousness sake.
4:14
Blessed are they which are persecuted
4:16
for righteousness sake. Now, this is a
4:20
good thing to remember. A lot of times
4:23
when we're doing godly things and we're
4:25
doing the right godly things, God
4:27
understands that. And a lot of times the
4:30
things against God in this world will
4:33
persecute us. In other words, they'll
4:35
say, "Well, you know, you're a fuddy
4:36
dud." That's a simple way of doing it.
4:38
And the other one is, I just simply
4:40
don't believe and just because you
4:41
believe, I don't want to hang around
4:42
with you. Well, that's a form of
4:44
persecution. Are people that do us wrong
4:46
simply because we are Christians. That's
4:49
not right either. Blessed are they which
4:51
are persecuted for righteousness sake.
4:54
If you're going to be persecuted and
4:56
you're going through trials and
4:57
tribulations, that's a good way to be
4:59
because God is the one that handles the
5:01
revenge work on that end. Uh revenge is
5:04
that of the Lord, not of mine. We're
5:07
supposed to go through our trials and
5:08
tribulations as if we're emulating the
5:12
Lord as he went through his. Uh the
5:15
purpose of trials is my next subject I
5:17
want to talk about. And we find that in
5:19
1 Peter chapter 6.
5:24
I meant to say we find that in 1 Peter
5:26
chapter 1 verse 6. Wherein you greatly
5:30
rejoice though now for a season. If need
5:35
be, you are in heaviness through
5:37
manifold temptations. Now, let me read
5:40
that again slowly. Wherein you greatly
5:44
rejoice, though now for a season, if
5:47
need be, you are in heaviness through
5:49
manifold temptations.
5:54
That's an interesting thought. A very
5:56
interesting thought. we find ourselves
6:00
in a season that God talks about
6:02
something for when we're tried. In other
6:05
words, there's a time and a season for
6:08
everything. And we read about in
6:09
Ecclesiastes and even the old song that
6:11
the bird sang back in the 60s. Uh every
6:14
season, there's a reason. Turn, turn,
6:17
turn. Uh we find out that trials are not
6:21
random. We'll go through good times.
6:24
We'll go through bad times. And
6:25
sometimes it'll be in the mediocre
6:27
session where we're in a transition.
6:29
They prove to purify us. In other words,
6:33
we're constantly growing in Christ.
6:35
We're constantly growing in our faith.
6:37
We're constantly growing in our strength
6:39
and our faith. Just like gold is tested
6:42
by fire. First Peter tells us that that
6:44
believers are going to be really tested
6:47
in this world. uh enduring those trials
6:51
with the love of God in your heart. It
6:54
strengthens your character. It produces
6:57
your patience. Now, patience is
6:59
something that I personally have to work
7:01
on on occasion because I come to learn
7:04
very quickly once I got into the
7:06
ministry field that when I read the
7:08
Bible and I take it literally and I take
7:10
it to myself and I put it to myself and
7:13
my actions, I find out that patience is
7:16
something the only way you're going to
7:17
get any deeper in patience is to go
7:21
through a trial. So, I've learned to be
7:24
content the best I can, but on occasion,
7:27
not being perfect, I still fall through.
7:29
But I recognize that God does allow
7:32
things to happen in our lives. And why
7:34
do bad things happen to good people? A
7:36
lot of people ask, well, it's very
7:38
simple. We're not exempt from anything.
7:41
Christ himself was perfect. And Christ
7:43
came. He was beaten. He was mocked. He
7:46
was scorned. He was lied about. And I
7:48
could go through a lot of other things
7:50
that happened to him while he was here.
7:52
And it was poorly disappointed in some
7:54
of his people that really said they were
7:56
his children and really were on the edge
7:59
a lot a lot of times in their own lives.
8:02
But re re realize that God's going to
8:04
reveal some bad times in your life. We
8:07
endure through these trials that God
8:09
allows. It strengthens that character.
8:12
It strengthens our patience. And when we
8:15
go through with the patience and the
8:17
glory of Jesus, we recognize that we're
8:20
bringing a smile on God's face for being
8:24
like his child and being more like him
8:27
because that's what brings glory unto
8:30
him. Moving on along in this Bible study
8:32
that we have today, I have a few more
8:34
things I'd like to share with you. I
8:36
want to talk about the blessings part.
8:38
I've talked about the trial and the
8:40
tribulation and the fact that we're
8:41
going to have them. But there are
8:43
blessings that are to come. And we find
8:45
one right off the bat in Revelation
8:48
chapter 2 verse 10. It reads like this.
8:54
Like I said, there is a blessing
8:55
involved in all of this. And it's
8:57
something we receive and we receive it
9:00
from Jesus himself. It's not a literal
9:02
crown, but listen to what it says. Be
9:05
thou faithful unto death, and I will
9:07
give you a crown of life. Man, think
9:11
about that. Fear none of these things
9:14
for which you shall suffer. Behold, the
9:17
devil shall cast some of you into prison
9:19
that you may be tried. And we recognize
9:23
in Revelation 2:10, be thou faithful. No
9:27
matter what happens, no matter what
9:28
comes your way, just remember God loves
9:31
you and God has a plan for you. Fear
9:35
none of the things that could happen to
9:36
you in this world which you shall
9:38
suffer. Behold, the devil shall cast
9:41
some of you into prison that you may be
9:44
tried. In other words, trials and
9:47
tribulations are coming, my friend.
9:49
Recognize that in life. It's how you go
9:52
through them. It's how we react to them.
9:54
It's how we react to how God loves us.
9:57
No matter what comes our way, no matter
9:59
how bad, we are able to endure whatever
10:03
may come against us. Whether it be
10:05
sickness, whether it be poorness,
10:08
whether it be famine, whether it be
10:11
anything that could happen to anybody,
10:13
that's common unto anybody. Jesus came
10:16
and his heart was broken as a man. But
10:19
believe you me, he's looking forward to
10:22
that day where he's can bring his
10:23
children home. Not a literal crown are
10:26
we going to receive, but eternal life
10:29
and honor with God himself. The crown,
10:33
the Greek word Stephanos, a victor's
10:36
crown given to those who overcome. In
10:39
other words, those who run the race,
10:41
fight the fight, do the deed, live the
10:44
life
10:46
promised by the Lord himself. this crown
10:48
he's speaking of. He promises things
10:52
that never fail. He's batten a thousand.
10:55
It is for those that love him and call
10:58
him Lord. Love for God motivates
11:01
endurance through the trials and
11:04
tribulations of this life, whether from
11:06
the evil one himself or whether God's
11:09
just moving us to the next plateau to
11:11
walk with him closer to glory. Recognize
11:14
this. We hold on. We hold on because we
11:19
treasure him above all things. Be
11:22
faithful unto death, Revelation 2:10
11:24
tells us, and he will give us a crown of
11:27
life. Well, I spoke of a lot of things
11:30
here. I spoke of a few things about the
11:34
endurance. I spoke a few things about
11:35
the trials and the tribulations and how
11:38
every Christian's going to go through
11:39
something. I also talked about what the
11:43
prize is at the very end. But God says
11:46
something else that's really powerful.
11:48
We find it in another passage of
11:51
scripture and we recognize that God said
11:55
he come to give us the abundant life in
11:58
John 10:10. The devil comes to steal, to
12:01
kill, and to destroy. But God son Jesus
12:04
came to give life to give it more
12:06
abundant. Recognize that more in a
12:09
moment.
12:11
Remember the scripture we started with.
12:14
Blessed is the man that endureth
12:16
temptation, for when he is tried, he
12:19
shall receive the crown of life, which
12:21
the Lord promised to them that love him.
12:25
It was the Lord that promised that. And
12:28
so we can expect it because he keeps his
12:30
promises. Practical applications of
12:33
today's lesson are like this. I read
12:36
like this. That is when you face
12:38
hardships, remind yourself this trial is
12:41
only temporary. The crown I'm going to
12:44
receive for enduring it is eternal.
12:47
Endurance is possible through the Holy
12:49
Spirit and by focusing on what God said
12:52
and what God promises. Demonstrate your
12:55
love to God and for God by staying
12:58
faithful through trials and temptations
13:02
and the good times too. There was a
13:05
song, the Mckamees, I believe was the
13:07
group that sang it. The God on the
13:09
mountain is the God in the valley.
13:11
encourage others who are struggling.
13:14
Remind them of the great reward that
13:17
Jesus promises those that will follow
13:19
him and love him. A few questions we may
13:22
want to ask ourselves about this lesson
13:24
today. One is ask yourself this. What
13:28
trial am I facing right now to which I
13:32
need to glorify God by coming through
13:35
shining on the other side? How can I
13:37
endure this
13:39
with faith? Think about that. God, I
13:44
need you. This is something I need you
13:46
for. My faith is strong that you can
13:49
help me through this. Do I see hardships
13:52
is another question as punishments?
13:55
Well, sometimes we do, sometimes we
13:57
don't. Simply because some things we
14:00
bring them on ourselves. But we can see
14:02
everything as an opportunity on how to
14:05
grow from what we've learned if we did
14:07
wrong or how can we glorify God in
14:11
what's going on right now by overcoming
14:13
it? And then finally, we may want to ask
14:16
oursel this question. Is my love for God
14:20
strong enough to keep me steadfast in
14:23
following him? If not, call upon him
14:26
now. Nobody is beyond his reach. No
14:29
circumstance is out of his reach. He can
14:32
overcome all. He overcome death for you
14:35
and me so that we might have eternal
14:37
life. Recognize this. Blessed is the man
14:41
that endureth temptation. But even more
14:43
so, blessed is the man that knows the
14:46
Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
14:50
I'm Alton Watkins. I'm glad to be here
14:52
with you. Tune in again. We'll have
14:55
another one of these very shortly.
14:59
Thank you for tuning in to this Bible
15:01
study.
