I'm Carrie. I'm Dave. We made it. Welcome to American Travelers. Dave grew up as a professional drummer
0:12
before he went into the video production world as a sound mixer. Carrie followed her mother's footsteps as a nurse
0:19
She loves distance running and even finished two 100-mile races. Our purpose is to show awesome destinations and share our new adventures
0:26
We've got a bunch of great stops to show you. We'll give some tips on how to budget your trip
0:30
Along with some history and culture of each destination. So come join us on American Travelers

We're on our way to check out the famous naval aircraft carrier, the Midway
0:42
Wow, that's a massive aircraft carrier. When coming to San Diego, the Midway is a must-see
0:48
It's a wonderful piece of our naval history. The Midway played a significant role in many major conflicts, including the Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf Wars
0:59
The ship's flight deck is three football fields long and is divided by three expansion joints, which allows the deck to flex when at sea
1:09
We continue our tour in CD Scopes at the Air Warfare Room and then proceed to the Air Traffic Control Center
1:17
Next is an interesting visit with a vet who worked on the Midway
1:21
Each one of these consoles have these hoses under pressure Right Is that saw hydraulic pressure no it water pressure this was chill water cold water running through the back of the system to keep it from overheating
1:37
because they weren't all computer chips they were vacuum tubes if you've ever changed the
1:42
light bulb when it burns out and it's hot these tubes would get hot you didn't want this system
1:48
to crash because a tube burned out. What is this thing here
1:53
That is called a radar repeater. You see it repeats the same signal that goes to that radar system there
2:03
But if you walked over and looked at that, see right there
2:07
Yeah. Those straight lines? Uh-huh. Those are half circles. Those are friendly aircraft coming back to land on the midway
2:14
The midway is the center circle with the X on it. so all those half circles are friendly aircraft, half squares are unknown aircraft
2:25
full circles are friendly ship, full squares are unknown ship so that radar, that console is giving you information
2:34
this one is just giving you raw data so remember the half circles that are in a line
2:40
here they're just a series of dots So this is a repeater
2:46
It repeats a signal without the information
