Cheers
0:04
Oh my gosh, cheers. Lovely to see you. Lovely to see you. Thank you so much. Mmm
0:10
Oh yeah. I was really excited to talk to you because you are the geek girl guide to Comic Con
0:17
Oh, my God. And I want you to just talk about like your tips and tricks because they were awesome
0:21
Thank you so much. I mean, my biggest tip is wear comfortable shoes. Okay
0:26
I know you want to look cute at Comic Con. So do I. However, it's a lot of concrete floor. A lot of concrete floors, a lot of standing, and a lot of walking
0:32
You're going to want a very supportive in-soul. Also, I think a really good tip is to bring personal business cards
0:38
Because you're going to meet a lot of people that you immediately know you have similar interest with
0:43
whether you're in line for a panel or you immediately know you like the same things
0:47
or meeting people at a table like this. People are going to want to know, like, what's your social media, what's your Instagram
0:51
Signals always kind of crap inside cons, so you want to have something that you can give people and make new friends
0:56
Which is great. My favorite of cons to make a new friends. Great because I was actually gonna ask is there like an app that you would recommend because like I always I always lose cards when people give them to me
1:06
Such a good call. I mean I take photos of business cards. Ah
1:09
Because like same. Yeah, that's gone immediately gone for me like yeah, yeah
1:14
yeah photos That in your phone forever So I know I love that and you were also like encouraging people to drink water I saw that Oh my God I know this is hypocritical because I right now I dehydrating myself actively But they really long days They really long days you talking a lot you shouting a lot There like this ambient screech in here at all times that you kind of talking over which is wonderful
1:37
Because people are very excited to be here, as am I. But it is important. It's important to stay hydrated and bring snacks
1:43
It's really hard to find like good, healthy food that's going to keep you going at a con
1:48
Protein bars, fruit, like big water bottles. Stuff's important. So this is interesting and different for you because normally you're doing panels and you're hosting. Yeah
1:58
And you're just here at like at your table, correct? Yes, yeah, yeah. It's nice to just be able to sit at my table and meet people who come to like buy my books because, you know
2:08
Which they're lovely and I- Oh, thank you. Please talk to me about some of them
2:12
I would love to talk to you about some of them. Okay, sure, Wonder Woman
2:16
This is a book about 25 unknown, basically unknown women in the history of like science and technology and
2:22
half. We were like never taught about in high school and we probably should have been
2:26
So I had to do the work. Instead, somebody had to do it. So this is one of my nonfiction books
2:31
I also have a fiction book called The Unstoppable Wasp, which is about the Wasp
2:35
The Wasp, if you've seen that movie, as a teenager. And I have a ton of Captain Marvel comics as well
2:40
which is probably what I've most known for. Captain Marvel, my favorite comic book superhero
2:46
and getting to write her comics was like really a dream come true
2:50
How did that happen Can you write me down like the origin story of that Oh sure I have been writing comics for IDW for a while Okay On and off and this opportunity came up and they asked me to pitch on it and I was so nervous and as you guys probably know in comics you never supposed to really want a job
3:08
because like you throw so much spaghetti at the wall. I pitch on so much stuff and 99% of it probably doesn't work out
3:13
So like wanting things is a very dangerous game but I was like this is my favorite superhero
3:18
I dressed up as knees Marvel in 2009 in college like I've always loved her and I was like
3:24
oh I really want this. And I was like, well, what do I love best about Kelly's stuconics run
3:31
And Chewy, the cat was like so memorable from that. As well as like, I feel like I identify with Carolyn Oggways
3:39
where she's like a workaholic. She doesn't really like people help her and all this stuff
3:42
And so that was kind of the pitch I put together. And it ended up working out, which was miraculous
3:47
And Sweeney Boo, who actually is next to me at this con right now, illustrated all of it
3:51
And it was really fun. We did 11 issues. 11. That is impressive
3:56
Thank you. And we definitely need more women in the comic book
4:00
Thank you. I agree. And you know what? There have always been women in the comic book industry
4:04
There has. We're still out there, which is wonderful. And we're more and more joining all the time, which I think is really important
4:10
The doors are opening more to more diverse people, which is incredibly important because
4:15
the more diverse people who have creating comics, the more diverse stories you're going to get. And that just makes stories more interesting
4:20
So now I got a question, though, because now that I know that Captain Marvel is like your favorite
4:24
superhero and you written for her Yes Is there a hero that you also enjoy that you would love to write for Oh boy great question I know
4:34
You can just show me on a couple. There's so many. I love to write Spider-Gwen
4:39
Spider-Gwen. I love her. I think she's a really relatable character. She is
4:45
I also really like... I like Aurora. She's a Canadian superhero. I'm Canadian
4:52
I like we need more Canadian. You know, Alpha Flight is kind of our only Canadian representation, so we take what we got
4:59
But I think that would be really, really fun. Yeah, those are a couple big ones
5:04
I would really let you write Harley and Ivy one day for you. Thank you. What's your hot take, though, on Batman
5:09
Oh. Would you do a Batman? I mean, yeah, I guess. That's a no one
5:16
It's not very interesting to me. Oh, I mean, he's my favorite. You can find my heart
5:20
Yeah, I love that. Okay. And I love that for you. No, that's not really for me
5:24
My niche is queer women. Sure, no, I get it. I get it, but we could still get a lot
5:30
I'm going to fall outside of that a little bit for me. No, look, I get it. I mean, I might have lost my parents and maybe that's why Batman was
5:35
Oh, you got a little, like, yeah, yeah. I got a little nostalgia for Batman
5:39
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It works out. It makes sense. You can have Harley and I. Perfect
5:45
And then I'll take the dark night somewhere. Perfect. More women should write Batman
5:49
I feel like they should. And we need to make that happen, so I'm on board. So I'm on board. We really should
5:53
Cheers to that. Cheers to that. Thank you
