BMW E36 Fuel Filter replacement is a simple, yet crucial task for any E36 owner. The fuel filter is a regular maintenance item that should typically be replaced after every 10,000 miles. The fuel filter is an often neglected component of most vehicles, because of the fact that it sits underneath the vehicle inside a cover. Fuel Filters get dirty like any other filter, and in worse case scenarios they may become completely clogged. Fuel Filter replacement on a BMW is rather straight forward, the biggest problem is that the filter itself carries several ounces of gasoline, which will pour onto anyone that opens up the fuel hose. http://bimmercraze.com/

Hey E36 Fanatics, Steven here. Today I'm going to do a fuel filter replacement on my BMW
0:07
It's a 1996 BMW 328 I. It's the same on any other BMW though. The older ones, it's a little bit different
0:15
it's a little bit easier to do on the 318 eyes, the older E36s, but it's pretty much the same on all of them
0:22
First though, I'd like to thank my subscribers. I'm hitting a thousand subscribers either today or tomorrow, something like that
0:29
So I'd like to thank you all for subscribing and viewing. Later on next week or sometime this weekend
0:36
I'm probably going to be uploading a couple videos on E36 convertible top repair
0:41
I'm getting a lot of questions about that, so I'm going to be doing a couple videos on general convertible top repair
0:48
But anyways, to the fuel filter, you're going to need an 8mm socket, 10 millimeter socket
0:55
and a 10 millimeter wrench, and a ratchet, of course, and you're going to need a Phillips head screwdriver and probably a
1:02
flathead screwdriver. It's a fuel filter replacement. It's really easy to do. However, it's a pain
1:10
You usually got to take a shower afterwards because no matter what you do, you're going to end up
1:14
getting dunked on by fuel because the fuel filter itself is going to carry a couple ounces of fuel
1:21
Now, some people like to crimp their fuel lines that are right, that go run along the, that attach to the fuel filter
1:32
I don't do that because you risk breaking the fuel line, the fuel hoses, but if you're going to replace the fuel hoses anyways
1:40
because they're really small and they're aware part, if you're going to replace those anyways
1:46
you might as well crimp them to reduce the amount of fuel that's going to get on you
1:50
Okay, so the first thing you're going to want to do is head over to underneath your hood in the front and take a look at your fuel pump fuse
2:00
On this vehicle, it's going to be number 18. On most E36, I believe it's going to be 18
2:07
And it is going to be this blue one right here. You're going to want to go ahead and pull that one
2:15
And then once you're done with that, we're going to go start the car. Okay so here my little 15 amp fuel pump fuse Let head over here And go ahead and start it up and it should die here in about 30 seconds
2:35
Oh, even quicker. A lot quicker. Awesome. Sweet. Now, what that does is it depressurizes the fuel system
2:48
so when we go ahead and remove the two lines that are attached into our old filter we don't get spewed with fuel
2:57
there's still going to be a few ounces of fuel spilling out that's because either way there's still
3:04
going to be fuel sitting in this filter and there's going to be some of the lines but we vastly
3:09
reduce the amount that's going to be coming toward us all right so next thing I'm going to go
3:15
ahead and jack up the front end here and throw it on jack stands okay so I've got my
3:21
goggles ratchet paper towels and a Phillips head screwdriver and I'm ready to go under
3:28
there okay here we are at the fuel filter as you can see it's got a hose with
3:37
two Phillips clamps here and here they go into it I'm also gonna replace this
3:42
little bit of hose because it's it's just It looks original. And then you got this cover right here
3:49
This is going to be the first thing we got to mess with is this cover. You got two 8mm bolts here, then one down there
4:04
And so I'm going to go ahead and remove those. Okay, so next up, you got to remove these last two screws holding in the cover
4:13
one's right here and the other one if we go further down is right here if we go further
4:27
down is right here so you got a total of four and you can remove all these with
4:33
an 8 millimeter socket then here is the other two that already moved there and
4:43
there So remove these other two and then this whole cover will go ahead and fall off Okay so this is where we at now Covers hanging down there And here our fuel filter
4:56
Don't need to mess with the cover anymore until we put it back on. So the fuel filter is held in by this clamp right here
5:06
It goes around it. It's got a 10 millimeter bolt. Once I loosen that up, then I'm going to go ahead
5:14
going to go ahead and remove this line right here, the inlet line, to the fuel filter
5:24
And then I'm going to remove this clamp right here to the outlet
5:30
And this is where you prepare for fuel. If you have a catch bucket or something, I suggest
5:36
you use it. But either way, you're going to want to, you're going to have to take a shower
5:40
after changing a fuel filter. So I'm going to go out. I'm gonna go ahead and loosen this up and I'm gonna put my phone down so gas
5:50
gasoline doesn't get all over it. Alright, here's our old fuel filter
5:58
Let's see. It's coming out pretty clear. I've seen really old fuel filters when I pour them out
6:08
They come out with this really dark brown almost fuel. So I'm going to go ahead and remove this bracket
6:14
I ended up having to remove the whole 10 millimeter nut, which isn't a big deal
6:22
Because this bracket gets really stuck to this filter. Don't forget when putting the new one in, you have an in and an out labeled on the filter
6:31
Let's see. Right here it says in. So the fuel coming from the tank is going 12
6:42
the filter entering in on this side and then coming out on this side
6:47
Pulled off the three clamps from the two hoses that I removed from the old fuel filter
6:53
and grab three new hose clamps and then I grab some 516th fuel injection hose
7:01
and I'm switching that little hose right here. It's actually an 8mm hose but 516th will work just fine because
7:09
you gonna have difficulty finding a an auto parts store with 8mm hose So I grabbed some 5 cut it to fit and now I about ready to put everything back on
7:21
I'm going ahead and fitting this back in and getting the 10 millimeter
7:27
the 10 millimeter nut back on, and then I'm going to start attaching these hoses
7:32
Okay, got everything back on. New fuel filter. Got the little nut on there
7:40
Now I'm just tightening up the new hose here and then the hose along that side
7:47
Got to remember to put these clamps, these lines back in. Here's a fuel line. Put that back in. Here's the oxygen sensors
8:01
I'm going to put those. There we go. Got the oxygen sensors back in
8:10
And before I actually put back on the cover, I'm going to actually throw back in that fuse and start run the car just to make sure that it's not leaking
8:22
That my lines aren't leaking anywhere. That's tight. So I'm going to go ahead and tighten these hoses down and I'll be done under here
8:32
All right, I'm back on top side. Throw my fuel pump relay back in
8:38
It was number 18, I believe. It's going to be this one right here
8:49
And now we're going to go ahead and start the car. Now remember, your fuel pump's going to have to reprim the system
9:00
So you're going to want to turn it two clicks at first and leave it like that for maybe 30 seconds
9:06
So the fuel pump can get a chance. to repressurize the system
9:11
And then after that, you can go ahead and cut the car on. Okay, so everything's checking out
9:18
It was leaking a little bit here, but I tightened up the clamp, and I think it's going to be just fine
9:23
So now the only thing to do is put back on this cover, those four little bolts, and you will be done with your fuel filter
