Hey, E36 Fanatics, Steven here. And today I'm working on my mom's BMWX-5
0:07
Unfortunately, she has a coolant link coming from her SUV, and I figured it out
0:15
I figured out that it's actually coming from the overflow tank. So this car only has about 60,000 miles on it, so I was pretty annoyed when I realized that the overflow tank had already gone back
0:29
tank had already gone bad because it's a newer vehicle as well. But I did a little
0:33
research and apparently the BMW x-5s one of the issues with their cooling
0:38
system is that they have early failure on their expansion tank. So what that
0:44
means is that I have three BMW E36s that I've never had to replace an expansion
0:49
tank on before that have over 100,000 miles but this vehicle already needs it
0:55
replaced. So I'm going to go ahead and get started. Luckily it's
0:59
quite easy to do. So I'll go ahead and show you all how to do it. The expansion tank is pretty easy to remove
1:06
You have one hose at the top, then you have one at the very bottom, and two 10 millimeter bolts
1:16
One is here, and then one is right here. So the first thing I'm going to do is go and remove these two 10 millimeter bolts
1:26
Like I said they very easy to do Just a 10 millimeter Alright so once you got these two little bolts out
1:38
next you want to go ahead and pull this top hose out. BMW switch to these clips on the coolant reservoir stuff
1:47
or on the cooling stuff and on a lot of their other sensors
1:52
Just pop it. pops right out and pops right off really easy pretty easy to do but I prefer the
2:09
screw ones here is the new coolant reservoir as you can see it's got a
2:16
men max inside of it and at the bottom and at the bottom it came with the new temp sensor
2:25
A temp level sensor. So if you buy this tank, sometimes it doesn't come with that though
2:32
So you might need to reuse your old one, which isn't a big deal. They rarely fail
2:37
Another fail point for the cooling system on these vehicles is the caps
2:42
If you have pulled off the cap and reinserted it several times
2:48
sometimes it'll do this on you and the inner portion of it will completely break off
2:54
so you can see this is the new one that i got with the portion still with it uh still
2:59
attached then this one it just completely broke off the tabs So I replacing this as well Sometimes the tanks will come with a new cap
3:11
Sometimes they won't. So if your cap's bad as well, I'd advise replacing it
3:16
Next thing you do, you've got some wiggle room now. You're going to want to pull this reservoir up some
3:21
so you can get to the bottom, the bottom hose, which is down there
3:29
And that's going to be the more difficult one. If you want to flush your system, be my system first, be my guest
3:37
I'm not going to do that for this. I'll just let some of the water drain out
3:41
It's not a big deal. Okay, so here's your bottom hose right here
3:46
It's a little bit more of a pain to get off. What I'll do, because you've got to twist the reservoir a bit
3:51
So I'll take a screwdriver, and I'll actually get this end right here
3:58
and push it with the screwdriver. That'll push this whole clip out
4:03
Then get a finger on the back side of it and hold it in place while you pull out the reservoir
4:09
Might have to twist it a little bit, but once you got that, it'll pop right out
4:15
And before you twist it, you're going to want to remove your sensor
4:20
which is right here going to your temp sending unit. It's very easy to remove
4:26
You basically just press it in pool So at this point you already you ready to put back in your new reservoir If you got the new sending unit like I do then you just leave it like it is if you don to remove it you just twist it and pull pops right out
4:49
okay so once you've got it back in place so the hose is back in place here
5:02
This is seated properly. You can go ahead and pop back on your top hose
5:13
There we go. That's all nice. Then we can go ahead and bolt it back in
5:27
All right, so once you got everything back on, you're gonna wanna go ahead and throw some cooling on it
5:32
refill it back up to the refill it back up to between the men and the max
5:39
and then you're going to want to seal it up and run it for a bit
5:45
let it cool and look around for any coolant leaks just to make sure you got a good job look around for any leaks
5:53
leaks around the area around the coolant reservoir if you don't have any
5:58
leaks or anything and the coolant levels around the men to the max

you're good. Hope you all enjoyed this video. If you did, please like and subscribe
