Ford Ranger Fuel Pump replacement diy. This is a relatively quick job, however it's considerably more difficult to complete without a second hand.
My fuel pump wasn't actually bad on this vehicle, but my sending unit was. The sending unit hadn't worked since we first purchased the truck and I was tired of resetting the mileage every time I filled the tank.
The biggest thing to ensure when doing this replacement is that you disconnect the tailing housing wiring and the fuel filler neck. This is also a great time to replace your filler neck hose, over time they tend to crack and leak gasoline.
Ford Ranger Fuel Pump replacement should take 1 - 2 hours depending on if you have an aftermarket bed liner, tool box or any other aftermarket parts that have to be removed.

Today I am doing a job on my Ranger, and what I'm doing is I'm changing out the fuel pump

It's a relatively easy job. It's actually underneath the bed. Pretty much, it's located right over here

So you need to either drop the tank or remove the bed

I consider the bed much easier to remove, since it's only got like

six torques bolts on it and I'd really I'd rather work from the top if it's that easy than from the

bottom so the first thing I'm doing is this thing has an aftermarket bedliner on it so I've got to

pull this first and I've also got to pull off my toolbox that I've put on here and once that's done

I can go ahead and get to the to the actual removal process this is a relatively easy job

The only thing you need is you really should have a second person helping you to pull this bed off

because it's decently heavy, so you really need somebody to help carry it

The reason I'm changing my fuel pump, it hasn't actually failed. However, the gauge no longer works

It hasn't worked since we bought it, actually. So we've been basically keeping track of the miles by using the old ticker up here

and pressing this whenever we fill up the tank. So I'm tired of having to do that and I got a fuel pump for like 50 bucks

So what's probably bad obviously is the sending unit. So I'm going to pull this and probably find that the sending unit's bad

but I'm going to change the whole fuel pump. So anyways, the first thing you want to do

once you're done pulling this in the toolbox, is you want to go ahead and pull off your tailgate

It's really easy. So all you got to do to remove your bed or to remove your tailgate is you got two

latches right here. I just got to pull up on. Pull that out of the way

It comes right out. Got the second one out. Then this thing just lifts up and out

lifts up and out Look that Doesn get much easier than that Alright so before you actually pull the fuel pump another thing you going to want to go ahead and do is pull the fuel pump relay which is this sucker right here on this truck

This is a 94 Ranger. Some of them are connected a little bit differently, but on here it's actually in the power distribution box, and it's labeled pretty obviously for the fuel pump relay right there

And so next you're going to go ahead and want to cut on your truck

and you're just going to want it to sit and there it is it's dead excellent so that basically

takes a lot of the pressure off of the fuel pump so you don't get sprits with fuel next thing you're

going to want to do pull out these screws right here and then push push uh your fuel neck in

Alright, so you got these bolts right here holding in your bed

They are, especially if they've never been removed before, they're really in there

I've got a breaker bar to remove them. So you got two up front

And, man, my bed's pretty dirty. There we go. We got one there

one there. Take note that the two smaller ones are in the rear, two longer ones are in the front

Next thing you want to do, move on to your tail light housing. You're going to pull off

you're going to want to pull off your brake light housing and remove your bulbs

This is also a good time to replace your tail lights if you want to

and these tail light housing units are really easy to pull. They just got four Phillips head screws holding them in

Two on the side here. And then two on this side. And that's the only thing holding this tail light housing out

All right, I got four screws out. This tail light housing. pumps right off just turn these sockets and they come right out There you go

And then what you're going to want to do, you're going to want to pull out the bulbs

and before you push this wire harness through here. And the reason you're doing that is you've got to push the bed back

You don't want to snap these wires. So I would pull these bulbs out just to protect them so they don't break when you're pushing it through

All right, so you should have pushed your tail light housing or your tail light wire harness through

They should be both dangling. How that that's done. And so I just used a little 7mm socket to remove these tiny little screws right here

holding it in the filler neck and then just push it through and comes right out and now you are ready to

pick up your bed and pull it back okay so i got the truck bed moved out of the way

as you can see here is the fuel pump area and man i tell you this thing is

who it's got grime all over it this thing probably has not been opened up since it was built

and it definitely it shows so i'm gonna clean up this whole area

You want to keep the gunk from getting into the fuel tank. And really, I might end up replacing this fuel filler neck right here

because I've had a leak when I fill up the tank and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the fuel filler neck right here

So I'm going to take a look and I might just change that out. Okay, so here I've disconnected the fuel lines

which if you've ever worked with American fuel lines before, they have these little clips that should just pull

out. These have probably not been messed with since they were made those, so they just fell apart

So I'm just going to get new ones. No big deal. And then I put a paper towel over it, just so no

crap falls through. And then before you actually start removing this, you're going to want to

vacuum this area and get a lot of this crap out. And that is because once you open this

like your fuel tank is going to be right here. So you don't want all this crap at the top

falling in So that why you gonna want to vacuum all this out Once you do this is just a standard fuel tank or a fuel cap how a lot of them go on and take a screwdriver or whatever you got i seemed to lost my have lost my hammer so i using a really big wrench

and you just tap it and that turns around the fuel cap and pops everything off all right so here's my

old fuel pump right here and here's my new one from O'Reilly's. So there are a few little differences. The sending unit is a little bit

different on the new one than this old one right here. And besides that, I mean, it's pretty

much the same exact part. The main thing you want to also check is your connections at the top

make sure the connectors are the same. And pretty much that's the main things to confirm

on these and obviously this is probably the original fuel pump so like I said I was tired of having to

click the button every time to make sure to check my fuel so this is only like 40-50 bucks so I went

ahead and changed the whole thing with the new one that's a rather simple repair all right so got

this sucker back on got all everything sealed back up and the only thing is

is to test it. So when you're testing it though you're going to want to go ahead and leave it

Leave it like that. Just throw it back on. Throw back on

Fuel pump relay. You don't want to test it like this because you don't want to pull the thing back off if you end up having a leak

Let's go ahead and cut a truck on. See what happens. Hey, and look at that

Look at that. We got the gas meter working all of a sudden. Well, so that's fixed that issue

Now my fuel gauge is working, and probably this fuel pump's going to last probably a lifetime that I own this truck

So now all you've got to do is put everything back together, and you are done with this one
