Kulwant Singh Bhamrah is a pivotal figure in the British Bhangra music industry. He is renowned as a lead singer and songwriter for the iconic Bhangra band Apna Sangeet. His passion for music led him to join Bhujhangy Group in the 1970/80s and then in 1983 form one of the biggest Bhangra bands of the times - Apna Sangeet - with Sardara Gill. Apna Sangeet defined the traditional yet innovative sound of British Bhangra. With bandmates like Gurcharan Mall (dhol), Davinderpal Kalsi (tabla), Arjinder Kang and Nikki Patel, they became a cultural and musical force. Apna Sangeet’s hits, including “Soho Road Uthey” and “Mera Yaar Vajave Dhol,” resonated with Punjabi audiences, dominating weddings and gigs in the 1980s and 1990s. Bhamrah’s songwriting captured the Desi lifestyle, earning the band numerous awards from across the world. Their music, rooted in Punjabi folk traditions and yet resonating with inter-generational audiences, bridged the cultural gap between folk and modern and their songs about love, celebration, and diaspora life become anthems.
