Wombleton Sheep Sale. This is on the edge of WW2 Wombleton aerodrome using a disused runway as hard standing for HGVs so an all-weather location. The concrete was put in very thick for heavy bombers and is so difficult to remove that most of it is still there, partly in use for light aircraft. It is not allowed for vehicles to stray even partly onto adjacent areas as they are marked as possible emergency landing sites. This is quite a small sale as they go with sheep sold as store lambs and for breeding. People not involved don't realise the scale of the industry about £1m will have changed hands yesterday alone and so many other trades supported. Ryedale and North York Moors have long been a stronghold of hardy well-bred sheep, exporting large numbers to other parts of the country since the middle ages.
