MEXICAN FLAG MEXICO CITY, MEXICO — MAY 22, 2026: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa to Mexico City on Friday, May 22, to sign two major pacts aimed at deep economic and political realignment. The leaders met for the 8th Mexico-EU Summit where they finalized the EU-Mexico Political, Economic and Cooperation Strategic Partnership Agreement, widely known as the Modernized Global Agreement. They also signed an accompanying interim trade agreement designed to expedite tariff reductions. In 2025, EU-Mexico trade was valued at more than €86 billion ($99.7 billion), roughly €53 billion in exports and over €34 billion in imports. The EU was Mexico's third-largest trading partner after the US and China, and its second-largest export market.
