It invites you as audience to meet with the victims of this violence in their full humanity, recognising sleep as a basic human need and sleeplessness as a struggle to which we can all, in vastly different ways, relate. When I returned from a (short) visit to Palestine last September, I quickly became lost in the existential overwhelm of it all. I had expected to feel huge amounts of anger I had not anticipated the crushing grief and despair. Sleep was not always easy to find. I remain broken hearted at the levels of violence and dehumanisation I witnessed, and which we see echoes of here at home against marginalised and scapegoated groups. Both antisemitism and islamophobia are lamentable products of the cycles of hate and othering in which we, collectively, seem trapped. We must recover our shared humanity. We must choose to love. We must choose to hope. Im learning that sometimes hope cant just be found, its our responsibility to act it into life.
