When it premiered in 2002, American Idol looked like a dream come true. All an aspiring singer had to do was impress a panel of judges with their talent, and they were on their way to fame and fortune. However, it turns out that it wasn't that easy, as even former judges have talked about how the show isn't all it's been presenting itself to be. Contestants have to choose from a selection of pre-picked songs, sad stories are played up whenever possible, and there has even been controversy about the honesty of the vote counting.
