Today I want to talk about the dog food that saved my dog's life
0:04
Hello, my name is Michael from the personal finance website, Michael saves.com
0:08
And this is a little bit of a different video from me, but it's an important one because
0:12
it's about my dog Lucy. When I adopted my dog nine years ago, she had a whole host of problems
0:18
I switched her from food to food. We've been on every type of protein and she had problems with them all after about six months
0:25
She would throw up, have diarrhea, and in one time I had to have her sent to the vet
0:29
for seven days just to get her back up and running and so she could live a healthy life
0:35
With all these vet visits, the bills really started to add up, and I brought her to a specialist
0:40
about two and a half years ago because she developed a separate condition. It was rat tail
0:45
she had thyroid issues. The solution for that was easy. It was thyroid medication, but we
0:50
used that opportunity to also switch her to a different type of food. And I didn't really know
0:56
much about this food and I tried to look for reviews of it at the time and didn't see a whole lot
1:01
So that's why I'm really creating this video. And the type of food that we switched Lucy to was oil canine hydrolyzed protein
1:08
I have the bag here. I'm going to show you right now. Now what it looks like I hope you can still hear me It is a teal bag There is a small dog formula as well as a regular formula and I also think they have a version for cats So this food was a real game changer Since two and a half
1:25
years ago, Lucy hasn't had any sort of episodes, and I really should show you to her. She's sitting
1:31
right here next to me a little camera shy. I have a picture of her on my phone though, and if you can't
1:36
see this picture, I'll link to it in the description below to my Instagram, lots of pictures for her
1:42
there. But really, obviously I'm not eating the food so I can't review it, but I can tell you that
1:48
the dog has no problem with the food. She really enjoys it. And all the issues that we've had
1:54
previously with her throwing up and diarrhea stopped once we switch to hydrolyzed protein
2:00
Now, I understand that this is an elimination diet food. I'm not a vet, so ask your vet about this
2:06
This is a prescription food, so you'll need a prescription from your vet to get it. But what I
2:11
understand is a lot of dogs will go in this for just six months. Due to my dog's age, she's about 11 or 12, we're not exactly sure
2:18
My vet suggested that she stay on this food for the rest of her life
2:22
I have since moved and switched vets and my current vet also agrees with that
2:28
So for a lot of people you may put your dog on this food for a short period of time to determine what going on as far as allergies but if you have an older dog maybe ask your vet like I did what to do and they may suggest that you keep your dog on hydrolyzed protein for the rest of their life
2:47
This food is not cheap. That's something that I want to mention right out of the gate. It is about $40 to $45 a bag
2:54
And the bag I have here is, this is the $40 bag
2:58
It is 8.8 pounds. There are a couple ways to save. The main way that I'm saving now is using the I Bata browser extension
3:08
I bought it is the cashback app, but if you shop using your computer with the browser extension
3:13
you can get cashback in online retailers. So as I mentioned, it's a prescription food
3:18
You're going to need a prescription from your vet, but you can ask the vet to give you the prescription
3:22
and then go to petco.com. Using the I bought a browser extension
3:27
you'll get a little bit of cash back. The last time I did it, it was 10% cashback
3:31
I'll link to all those instructions in the description below on how to use the I bought a browser extension
3:37
how I use it to save money on this food. Another way, if you don't want to mess with the browser extension
3:43
is to set up auto delivery through Petco That will save you a couple bucks a month on the food Another thing since my dog has it appears to have some pretty severe allergies issues with chicken beef venison all other types of food it seems
4:01
I don't give her any other treats. And there I said her favorite word, she just perked up a little bit beside me
4:07
I give her these little kibbles as her treats. So this is her food
4:12
No other special bones or no other commercial foods that are sold at the best
4:16
pet store, it's just this one prescription food. I found that by limiting to just this
4:22
that I've been able to really resolve all the problems for her, and I feel like she's living
4:27
a happier and healthier life than she has in a really long time. So that's my quick review of
4:33
Royal Canaan Hydroized Protein. If you have an experience with this food, I think it'd be great
4:39
if you could leave a comment down in the comments below, because as I mentioned, when I was
4:44
researching it. I couldn't find a whole lot of information about the food out there
4:47
and the more voices, the better for other pet owners who may be going through a similar
4:52
type of situation with a dog who has severe allergies. Thank you for watching, and if you're
4:57
interested in my other type of content, it's all about practical ways to lower your monthly bills
