5:24
welcome to another episode of crazy Fitness guys healthy living podcast I have my friend Bernadette uh who's going
5:32
to be talking about uh how to listen to your own body intelligence uh I think this is going to
5:40
be a fun one uh let's dive into it welcome on the show hi welcome welcome from Austria
5:48
I'm totally thrilled that I'm allowed to be on your podcast to me I'm glad to have you uh so can you tell me a little
5:55
bit about uh how to listen to your own body intelligence for me it's like I'm a high sensitive
6:02
person so I'll I'm I was always aware of a lot
6:07
of stuff but um you know since education and then you go to school and then you I somehow
6:15
you begin to listen to everybody else because since childhood you always believe that others are
6:21
more known and and more intelligent than myself and I I totally you know lost the
6:29
feeling or the sense for my body and to that I'm I can wait because I had
6:34
tons of stuff at home and I'm coming from a bakery and all this stuff and I I
6:40
really became kind of overweight um and then when I began to work after I
6:48
came back to America um I was in a company where there were pretty mean they were truly mean and I
6:55
stopped eating so I from I became from over with to anorexia nervosa
7:01
I I just got an eating disorder and when I came back from from I was
7:09
abroad I was working abroad in in France in Germany in Sweden and in Dublin when
7:16
I came back home I I was underweight so I was less than uh 50 kilos
7:24
and I I just stopped everything and the first I still remember
7:30
when my doctor saw me and he got not a heart attack but it was looking like
7:35
what and and for me I I didn't realize it anymore and the only thing what I knew
7:43
is when I don't help myself I will die and so I began to to learn a lot to
7:49
begin um I was wondering why I can't eat normal anymore and uh I begin to to find for myself
7:57
Solutions as that something what I still do today and I just begin to listen to my body
8:04
and and I was like okay I can't eat this one I have to find something else oh I
8:09
can eat this one that feels good okay then I'll you know take it to my diet
8:15
and then I I find more and more that what actually was happening was do my
8:21
high Sensitivity I I just I just lost the feeling for myself but I felt
8:28
everybody else and I always wanted to help everybody else and I always wanted
8:33
that everybody else is happy and I just forgot myself to do that and
8:39
today I created my own nutrition style to my challenge actually to my life
8:45
Challenge and also my own coaching therapy Style and I learned what actually High
8:51
sensitive High sensitivity means um and I also learned from Asperger by
8:57
the way and it was so interesting because you you have different perception than I have and I learned so
9:03
much from it and as more as I begin to listen to my body I I call it body intelligence
9:10
because your body is actually a Wonder miracle and as far as I begin
9:15
to listen to my body I I knew okay this stuff it's not good for me either the
9:21
food or the drink or whatever so let's find something else and I use I created
9:26
different methods how I can listen more and more to my body and listen also
9:32
which kind of sport my body loves and and what I what feels good for me
9:39
and um okay I had more challenges than than you're being uh becoming and eating
9:46
disorder or getting needed eating disorder I also had three burn art and there's more as I had those body
9:54
challenges as more as I became aware that the what everything what I learned
9:59
since childhood or also the beliefs I overtook are not healthy and I don't
10:06
know how it is in you your country but in my country like working and and women
10:11
and we have also be tough and they'll be nice and be brave and whatever they're
10:17
all beliefs but what we perceived in childhood in my generation and and I
10:23
discovered that this this is just not good it's not healthy it's not healthy at all
10:28
and therefore I I obviously I discover myself
10:34
thanks to our sponsor to make this podcast happen if you haven't heard about anchor it's the easiest way to

11:05

11:10
anchor.fm to get started oh by the way I forgot to mention
11:16
uh it only takes about five to ten minutes to set up it's simple easy and
11:24
the best part is free so download the free anchor app or go to anchor.fm to
11:29
get started today to just create your own podcast every single day and what
11:36
through my body through what I perceive and um as more as I know what I like what I
11:44
love what I be as more as I can open up again and be sensitive again and that's that's that's
11:51
in in times of crisis pretty interesting because for many years I create copious
11:59
tragedies and I'm using my own strategies and my resilience methods to stay healthy in these times
12:06
and for me it's like as more as I listen to my body as more as I'm getting
12:11
healthy and I have today I'm I'm 44. I'm
12:17
feeling like 30 or actually 20 plus something I have the best blood uh
12:24
picture as well as the hormones and everything else because I'm checking it one two uh
12:31
twice per year with my doctors um and it's interesting because 20 years
12:36
ago you always believed that when you are young you have you're vital you can do whatever you want but if you just
12:44
don't nurture your body you can be dead with 30 or 40 as well so true
12:50
um would you say when you were where you say that you were kind of a
12:56
people pleaser back then or I'm still a probably I'm still one of those women who want to
13:04
take care of everybody else that they be happy and content but uh as Morris I see that people
13:13
misuse this this attitude as more as I begin to say no
13:20
and it's not out because I'm I love to take care of other people and nurturing
13:26
I mean I love my coachings and my materials but I do and also my nutrition trainings
13:32
but there are a lot of people out there who Miss misinterpreted and and believe that
13:40
that then we we can misuse that kindness or however you want to call it
13:46
and that's the only reason why I begin to say no and and really say no no no no
13:51
no no this is this this they are you're not
13:56
going further on and it seems like that a lot of women uh having this kind of attitude
14:03
to to want to take care and nurture and there are a lot of people out there who interpret misinterpret it and
14:09
misunderstand it and just just um use it for their way and that's for
14:16
me something really weird and if if it's a people pleaser or not
14:22
it always you know it always depends how you want to define it but uh I still I still say to myself yes
14:28
I understand that I have for some people I have to make clear say no
14:33
not for it on and for some people staying in this in this kindness in this
14:40
in this nurturing field um helps them to to open up for whatever
14:48
reason they they have a story because everybody of us has a story behind
14:54
and um I think at the moment learning um saying no and knowing when when it's
15:01
okay to to stay open and nurturing is is um is what I'm learning at the moment
15:08
now I do I learned from um my uh Sensei and my Joseph and karate that uh that
15:17
you're allowed to be selfish for yourself as that yeah it's like if you
15:22
don't take care of yourself and it's like you can't be there to take care of everyone else and and it's totally
15:29
totally true and it's like if you don't take care of your own self you could be dead and and then you have and then the
15:37
person the people that you take care of
15:42
yeah and sometimes they don't even bother if you're not there anymore they
15:47
just they go to another person and and it's interesting because I'm as
15:52
you said I I had a mentor and he he's also aspected by the way that's why I
15:57
buy a door ask there is much because he he said the same what he said he said first to take care of yourself
16:04
be selfish be selfish so that also other people understand
16:10
that it's not common and not uh taken for granted that you that you're nice
16:17
and and for me it's like what he's talking about and I I'm still learning from that
16:24
because it was 10 years ago when you begin to say that to me and I'm still learning from it and I'm like no I don't
16:32
want to I I want to be here for the other ones because I created my stuff 20 years ago
16:39
to my own challenge to understand that you guys also have kind of challenges and I came over you know I went through
16:46
and and just you know want to give you my stuff and just that you're happy and content and sometimes they just you know
16:53
misunderstand it so I I think we just learn every single
16:58
day and my body is my my signal if I feel right if it I feel good if I stay
17:05
healthy then I go on if I'm I'm not feeling good if I don't stay healthy and
17:10
feeling you know just kind of bad inside then I have to stop it
17:16
so how how can somebody start practicing learning to listen to their body
17:24
it's the different stuff there there is one one basic method and I love to share it with you because I see it especially
17:31
when I work with women especially when I work with women who wear abused that
17:37
that they have no idea what it that the natural boundary they have they did say
17:43
no it's a huge topic out there especially with women um and and I learned one thing I I'm I'm
17:51
sharing one thing with them it's like uh a mental message or that you're really
17:56
working on on energetically and on mentally level for mental health it's
18:01
like imagine you you you're leaning on on your favorite tree
18:08
and when you're leaning there you feel your tree and everything else then imagine you go into this tree
18:14
and make this tree that big when you're still open up your hands and and you
18:21
know make circles around your body with your open hands that you still be
18:27
in this train and big trees and everybody of you know
18:33
what a big tree is needs really really good roots so uh use your feet and get
18:40
rooted um with with this tree with this big tree as deep as possible and as broad as
18:46
possible and just feel this dream and imagine if
18:52
this trains your your security space or however you want to call it you you can you can make this tree as
19:00
big or as small as for you how do you feel comfortable
19:05
and then you you begin with this tree to fill your body
19:12
is there anything in your body about X or dark spots where something what
19:18
doesn't feel right yeah
19:24
I know uh I definitely say that they're
19:29
there's probably a lot of dark spots in mines in mine uh in my tree
19:35
and it's interesting because a lot of people a lot of people either they're trees so small they don't
19:42
have space in there and that's why they get hurt so many times
19:47
and if they make the tree big and see there's protection
19:52
they get less hurt and the tree is is not only a symbol and
19:58
it's not only meditation but it's something where you can use it everywhere
20:03
and our body is not it's not the barrier you can make it way much bigger so that
20:09
you feel comfortable and I give give and I want to give you your listeners that this this tool as
20:15
well you just write in the tube try it in the bus and the interesting part is every time
20:22
when I when I go into my tree because if I don't feel comfortable because there
20:28
are so many people around and if I go in my tree and make the tree totally big and make make
20:35
um the the core of the tree you know really tight so that I feel comfortable
20:42
and cozy inside the people go away and I tried it with children I tried it
20:48
with women I tried it with men this this uh this basic method and that they always say to me there is
20:55
change and I said yes because your your body don't don't have to be the barrier or don't have to be something where you
21:03
where you get all your hurricanes in use the tree because we don't need the herdings or
21:08
the dark spots in our body and and people change
21:15
and as more as I work with them they they see the difference
21:22
when you work mentally and energetically that you don't need your body anymore
21:28
uh becoming ill getting diseases that we that we listen to our body again
21:36
so are there any other ways that one can also listen to their body whether it be
21:42
a journaling be one and the other thing what I do is I I do
21:47
nutrition journals I write down my nutritions and especially when I when I begin to work
21:53
with people I let them write down at least three weeks every single day what
21:59
they eat and what they drink and also alcohol and also smoking and most of the time the people say to
22:05
me I didn't realize that my my food habits are that bad
22:11
and most of the time I say 100 but most of the times the 90 we are emotional
22:18
eaters so most of the time we eat out of emotions different ones when we have and
22:24
I'm pretty sure everybody knows when you have bad days most of the time you want something sweet
22:30
no I'm me neither because I I have more fun
22:37
with with um with with bread and and salad and the kind of cheese which I actually
22:44
shouldn't eat but that's what I like but every single time when I ask women they
22:50
say to me oh chocolate when I'm upset I I want to have chocolate and I'm like
22:55
yeah that's a typical women I don't know why but it's the way it is and on basic on neuroscience
23:03
we eat out of emotions and we we remember our food especially
23:10
the food what we can't get rid of or be addicted to they're always connected with positive
23:16
emotions and I'll give you an example Jimmy do you have like a favorite food
23:23
uh uh sushi with with uh Sushi it's beautiful and do
23:31
you do you connect it with a good feeling where do you connected with the person or some event what do you what
23:37
you uh always remember every time when you eat sushi uh I cannot say with just
23:45
uh I just like the taste of it I just like I like the taste and
23:51
uh I I also connected to an event there was when I was in a school uh years ago
24:00
I mean I'm still in school but I mean when I was younger in school uh I was
24:06
back in New Jersey where I was born um so somebody asked me like when we
24:13
went on a field trip to uh this grocery store a local grocery store and uh and
24:19
everybody this guy uh who was making decisions behind the characterized and say he wants to try a piece of sushi I
24:26
was the only one who raised my hand and their teachers ready to uh uh had me
24:32
spit uh off in her hands I ate it I was like I like this fish and everybody's
24:39
like you're weird and it's like no I want to go plus I had it before before that too so
24:46
it's like and and which which kind of emotion do you connect with sushi uh
24:54
uh I don't know like happy I guess
24:59
I mean because I feel like it's kind of like comfort food for me I know like somebody might say oh well uh I don't
25:07
know homemade meals come from food and I was like yeah that's comfort food too but this is like my healthy kind of
25:12
comfort food that is not made by me and I don't think I can make it
25:18
but at least you have a reason to go somewhere where they have good sushi yeah and plus they always know my name
25:24
there so yeah there we go and that's what I mean that most of the
25:29
time when we have our favorite food we connected with good feelings emotions with a person one event
25:37
and that's how their body learns and otherwise worser by the way
25:42
um and addiction comes when when you're connected an event or a nutrition
25:48
with a Feeling which which gives you something out of
25:54
it do you know what I mean for entertainment
25:59
yes and and that's so interesting and that's how the body sometimes like with drugs
26:06
and alcohol because the connective they're feeling with I had fun I'm I'm
26:12
together with with other people like-minded one and and I just feel good
26:17
they feel good feeling and that's why a lot of people don't don't get away from those addictions
26:23
and our body remembers it our body it's the same with sushi your
26:30
body knows you get happy with it so your body reminds let's go Sushi
26:36
again because I had a feeling a really good feeling about it Professor is also sometimes where I just have a really uh
26:43
strong taste for us like I haven't had this in a while I want Mercy machine
26:49
you kind of get bored after a while on other things it's like almost issue yes
26:55
me neither I love the sushi place where I like is like less than five minutes away from me so I was like yeah probably
27:03
like two minutes away I was like I want to see she
27:13
but um because I deleted all those those um memories with the food
27:19
so that my body chooses the food what where I get healthy inclusive Sushi By the way because this
27:26
is really really good food and um When you pray for something
27:32
then most of the time in this in this food
27:40
today's episode is brought to you by hellofresh do you feel like you are stuck in a dinner ride with hellofresh
27:48
you get fresh pre-measured ingredients with mouth-watering seasonal recipes deliver right to your
27:55
door skip all those trips to the grocery store and count on hello fresh to make your home cooking easy fun and
28:02
affordable you can now enjoy cooking and get dinner on the table in 30 minutes or less with over 25 recipes to choose from
28:10
each week they are there is something fun there's something for everyone to enjoy all recipes are designed and
28:17
tested by professional chefs and nutritional experts to ensure delicious deliciousness and simplicity
28:26
go to the link and I'll show notes to get 80 off including the free shipping on hellofresh the number one meal kit
28:35
the code is a checkout h f a f f eight zero
28:44
for the discount what do you what are you grieving is
28:50
something in there either vitamins minerals or whatever what your body needs to stay healthy as as well
28:57
and I learned that actually from children I don't know how if you remember it when
29:03
you were a child for me example I I just ate a day some the similar stuff
29:10
because it feels good and it seems like that I needed it and then I stopped it for a while
29:16
I still do it at the moment I have pumpkin I can I could eat pumpkin every
29:21
single day two three times per day I don't matter I just love it
29:27
so there is something in here I just I could eat pumpkin a lot too I
29:34
was I literally just uh saw like six different pumpkin recipes today on Facebook yes I mean I want this now yes
29:44
but it's I mean on one side it's it's the time for it and I always said I love
29:49
to have seasonal food and also as close as possible grown and on the other side it has a reason
29:56
why in this time this certain food is growing because it's something what our
30:02
body actually needs like pumpkin or sweet potatoes
30:08
um this this is kind of food what's typical for Autumn and they have the minerals and with vitamins what do you
30:14
actually need for your body that's staying healthy so when people track their food should
30:22
they use an app or should they use or should they write it down I am a writing down person even when I'm
30:31
online all day it's probably the reason but I'm a person who who has printed
30:37
paper write it down every single day I'm I my mom cooks at the moment because she
30:44
loves to cook um and I write it down okay Mom I need this fruit I need this food and this one
30:51
only that that we you know that that we have a mixed food and mixed meals and
30:56
that I have all all my minerals and vitamins and that I stay healthy
31:02
and as as more as I write it down I get more sense of it
31:07
um to stay healthy it's like that like tops border top uh sporty people they
31:13
also have their nutrition plan normally they also have you know that they weighted everything single one that
31:19
don't eat too much and something like that that's what I'm not doing but I write down every single day or actually
31:26
ahead for the week um okay to see okay what what what food
31:31
do we have at home how can we combine it that it's uh that's a balance tool and
31:37
balanced meal every single day and that they have all the the energy what I actually need for working because
31:43
especially this month I work a lot and if I would eat yes it was like
31:50
it was crazy October was crazy for working and if I wouldn't eat right or
31:56
healthy I couldn't handle all the work so food should be should be your
32:01
medicine there is there is a sentence uh hypocris always say who should be your
32:06
medicine and if you choose the right food you stay healthy it's the same actually with sport if it if you do you
32:14
know way too much sport it's not healthy if you not do any sport it's not healthy either but if you do the right sport
32:21
um asking all your body what if which kind of sport is actually good for you for your body
32:27
then you choose the right stuff and you stay healthy like for me uh I'm kind of I'm totally
32:35
the opposite I uh I use uh MyFitnessPal
32:40
it's an app on my phone if you give if somebody gives me a piece of paper
32:45
chances are I'm gonna lose it like 99.9 chance I will lose it like I kid you not
32:54
uh I used to have a Microsoft Word on my computer and uh it came in one of those there's a
33:01
life a lifetime subscription uh just like one time purchase and uh and then
33:09
it was like a 2013 version of it and uh and I have a key somewhere for it I mean
33:16
like the product key for it but I don't remember where I put it so I'm like uh and then my parents asked me it's
33:25
like well is in your final cabin is like it probably is but I don't have time to go look for it
33:30
I was like well come on you're being lazy and it's like no I'm not being lazy but I'm doing like six million other
33:36
things in a day and I was like I don't have time to go freaking look for it because what if it's not there then I'm
33:41
going to look for another freaking spot where it is I thought I'll look for it after the semester in college
33:48
it's but I I tried apps too and I it was so crazy because when I use
33:55
this app it I think the name is jco or something like that I begin to eat more
34:00
and I was like no I don't want to do that so I deleted this app and I just
34:05
like no so that's why I'm still having a piece of paper and I'm like and my mom
34:11
it's like Mom for tomorrow I need this food I wrote it down we please stick to the
34:18
to the meal sometimes she just make you know for herself something else of course cake
34:25
pons of cakes my mom makes makes but I think it's Austrian problem we just love
34:30
baking and we just love eating cakes and and it's just like um if I would use
34:36
the app again I it would be crazy because for me it's like ice but there's
34:43
one thing what I stopped actually even when I'm a nutrition trainer I don't do any calorie counting
34:48
this calorie counting made me crazy it was like it's like oh no way no for me I
34:56
don't use it for calorie counting I use it for my my macros more accurate ah
35:01
okay okay yes uh and when I so far I've tracked over almost 300 days worth of uh
35:10
tracking as I want the 365. I'm on a whole year of tracking
35:17
I think but on one side you're actually right because you results you
35:25
last year and this year uh what I actually don't have but it's more there's one there's uh one
35:32
event which what made me thinking actually because uh I made
35:37
um practica I made a practice for my nutrition trainer uh education
35:44
um with uh female tennis and they
35:49
um in um in an Institute where they worked uh regarding eating disorder and
35:56
those teeny ladies they were they were amazing in category counting and I was like I think it was so scary to see
36:04
I mean they truly had an eating disorder and seeing how they uh fit into
36:13

36:55
thank you to a calorie counting I was like no way I'm not going there I just begin to
37:02
listen to my body and if there's a cheating day it's totally okay if if I
37:07
still feel healthy getting energy out of it and don't have any any gut problem
37:14
then it's okay and for me because when when I I need to
37:20
to count calories it's like there's no fun there is no pleasure in eating there
37:26
is no no enjoying you know what I mean and and for me it's like
37:32
um I Cooks on my own I know what I like meanwhile I know which nutrition is good for my
37:40
body and for my gut especially and um this is this it should be still
37:46
make fun if if you lose the fun or the pleasure of eating
37:53
to diet to to only I don't know staying
37:59
young and staying thin there's no pleasure in it anymore
38:05
and that's why I stopped it I kind of would tell people I wouldn't I wouldn't
38:10
say uh for me I'm doing it kind of as a lifestyle because uh
38:18
yes then I just what I do every single day now for Sunday sometimes I did a
38:25
cheat meal or once it one day a week if I want one but but for instance like I
38:32
could go well literally a whole few months with a Gmail I don't care
38:39
and like for me for me I don't really find entertainment and
38:45
food for me entertainment comes from video games movies TV shows uh reading a
38:54
book I just finished reading my uh 20th book uh of the year uh two days
39:03
ago and um I just started my 21st book yesterday so I don't know if I don't I don't know
39:10
if that considers I don't know if that considers me that if I have a life or don't have a life
39:16
um I don't know or maybe I'm just a nerd I don't know me too but a different one
39:22
for me it's like I'm I'm working so much and sitting a lot in front of the
39:28
computer um for me cooking baking and also reading books but offline I
39:34
hate reading books online it's like uh the work life balance the same with
39:40
traveling there are a lot of people have no idea why I'm traveling so much and I'm like hey that's my hobby I'm I'm
39:47
getting so calm when I'm around when I'm traveling I'm I'm also stopped flying
39:53
I'm just traveling by bus and by train only because no one can reach me there at this time and for me it's like poor
40:00
pleasure and and and just calm down to me and you know but I think everybody
40:06
finds for themselves the the work-life balance and action we should
40:12
um and if it's for others being a nerd I'm like I don't care I feel I'm happy I
40:18
just love it I also love it to to try every single food in different countries
40:23
what they believe their specialties which is not sometimes really a good
40:29
idea but I still do it especially in countries you know like in Asia and so
40:34
sometimes it couldn't deal when you when you just ask what what's in there before you try it it's just only a little tip
40:42
of myself and um as long as long as you are happy that's
40:48
what I always say I don't care anymore what other people are saying I don't care anymore if if
40:54
other people believe what I'm eating is too healthy or it looks disgusting and so yeah maybe for you but I still I like
41:01
it my body likes it I'm staying healthy I'm I'm healthy and vital I don't drink
41:07
I don't smoke I don't eat chunk food anymore um and just I just have different
41:13
interests so now I think that's totally okay as well I think occasionally different like maybe turn
41:21
a holiday meal like Thanksgiving or Easter Christmas
41:28
or some other kind of holiday not like every single holiday but the major ones
41:34
where you gather around with friends and family not like I don't know Valentine's Day or or
41:42
um Memorial Day I was like I I need all the junk food it was like they're very
41:49
special occasions but I think if we if we don't let it
41:55
that that we that we have cheating days then then it's like this must in my
42:03
deepest belief is that we should get rid of this must I must be healthy I must
42:10
eat healthy uh food or do healthy balance yes
42:16
and it's totally okay and I had a doctor and he was he was really profound for my
42:22
life he became over 90 and I grew up with him and he was totally into
42:28
holistic medicine back then even and and he he always said to us you have
42:35
to eat at least two two kilos of of he said dirt so you know not healthy food
42:42
per year otherwise you're too healthy and and I still remember I grew up you
42:48
know we were playing outside we got we got dirt we we didn't we didn't you know
42:54
wash the fruit we just picked it from the tree we did you know we just cleaned
42:59
the dirt down and we just ate it and and we were healthy ah I was once a year ill
43:07
just something some beige and that's it so I was really healthy and when he said
43:14
this sentence it was an excuse actually to go to McDonald's because our doctor always said we have
43:21
at least two kilo third per year yes we can go to McDonald's again because we
43:27
did we were solely we were so uh eating healthy now it's totally okay when we eat this one
43:33
and if you lose the the fun with food then you have a problem
43:40
and it it doesn't matter and and there is also another sentence of hippocritis he said the doses makes a difference
43:49
if you only eat and stay healthy it's unhealthy either if you only live
43:54
totally below drugs and alcohol and junk food it's
44:00
unhealthy either just listening yeah you just listen to your body and
44:06
make a balance make a balance and it should still be fun
44:12
out of it so uh before we wrap up uh
44:17
uh where can people follow you oh I'm I'm you will find me in on every
44:24

44:34
interested in in different categories and um my nutrition website is uh
44:41
origination.com and we we will relaunch it
44:47
um because I begin now to really go out there and and begin to to to to to train
44:54
and teach people how to listen to themselves again because in time of Crisis it's the best way to to stay
45:01
healthy just listen to yourself and it's not always about fruit it's
45:06
about all intakes what you take it's the same with with people but how they talk
45:13
what you see on media and uh what you actually want to perceive in your life
45:18
and staying healthy is on all levels that's my people's belief
