hello and welcome to the Broad Street Hockey Podcast live here on a Tuesday
0:21
afternoon i'm your host Ryan Gilbert joining me as usual is my co-host Joe De
0:26
Marini and today we have a special guest to help discuss the draft we got Jacob
0:31
Russell from Browser Docky how we doing today guys dope i'm doing perfectly
0:38
adequate perfectly adequate i mean hopefully that's fine yeah as long as you're not
0:44
doing hopefully we get better throughout the day i went for a run today and my legs are going to fall apart oh it's my
0:52
own doing yeah I was yeah I mean if you're doing adequate after going for a long run like
0:58
it's Yeah you're doing great then yeah if we're grading on a curve yeah I think I'm doing fantastic yeah absolutely
1:04
there so um Joe I mean we should call you a Joe Garde Marini because you got a you got a big garden there with the with
1:10
the cucumbers yeah no I uh I was out there today i
1:16
only needed two cucumbers but as I was like messing around with the plant I found a third one that was larger than the two I'd already cut off and I was
1:22
like "Oh crap I gotta I gotta snip this one." And then I found a fourth one that I'm like I got I can't just harvest this
1:28
i got to leave it there for another day or two so it's uh cuz they start deteriorating as soon as you cut them
1:34
off and I'm like I'll just be up to my ears and cucumbers you're not just firing back four cucumbers and within
1:40
three days isn't there like a Tik Tok guy who's like a billion ways to eat a
1:45
cucumber and he like makes these cucumber salads and stuff i don't know i'm not on Tik Tok are you This is old
1:51
man pod are you Are you going to pickle that Joe you you going to make some pickles
1:57
you know I've never tried pickling i'm a little intimidated because um you have to sterilize the jars and like that's a
2:04
whole thing and I don't know if I want to do that quick pickles sure maybe I'll
2:09
try that for like lunch tomorrow yeah there yeah and uh we we got some uh baby
2:14
praying manises back in our in our catnip plant on our our deck there we had we had one there that was uh last
2:20
year we saw it grow big and now we there was one before now it's just we saw like four or five yesterday so hopefully
2:26
they're uh they're doing well there cool that's awesome yeah enough uh old man
2:32
talk here to cultivating ecosystems yeah you growing anything Jacob up there in
2:37
uh Canada no no we just got some herbs just some herbs and parsley how did you
2:42
say that the first time i said it wrong i said it wrong okay uhhuh yeah there my
2:48
fault okay uh I had my my best friend's name uh dad's name was Herb growing up so Oh there you go that was my gym
2:55
teacher's name herb and slip yeah all right make sure here top of the podcast you are subscribed to the Broad Street
3:02
Hockey feed on YouTube on Apple Podcast on Spotify all that good stuff got plenty of great draft content offseason
3:09
content coming up here so make sure you uh subscribe and uh get along there and speaking of the drafts oh yeah speaking
3:16
of the draft we got the uh the draft party at Chicks and Pets in uh South Philly right there by the stadium
3:22
complex that's going to be on Friday tickets are $5 all go to Snider Hockey so um just just want a headcount you
3:28
know $5 donation you know right get in there um not sure if we have anything north of the border up there in Toronto
3:34
for Jacob and Thomas and whoever else maybe maybe we can get J Jason McNeel to come down from whatever yeah from out
3:41
from out east or out west or some coast he's on i don't know yeah um if you come
3:46
to my house I'll give you a beer but I don't think I have anything else to offer necessarily uh on day on the day
3:54
yeah uh when flights become cheaper uh maybe I'll I'll uh I'll find my way down there one day but I feel that day will
4:00
never come uh so I may just have to take the bullet maybe it's next year uh but
4:06
uh it's always a good time down there always fun interacting with everybody uh
4:12
who surrounds the website and uh we just talk flyers and get upset when they pick
4:17
somebody at six that they shouldn't yeah last year we were a little bit upset with the trade down to Luchenko there
4:24
but the year before it was it was an absolute blast with Mechov falling to the Flyers at seven so hopefully we have
4:30
more of that here a trade down a trade down is never good for a draft party it just is like oh
4:38
naturally antilimactic what was even worse was either the year before that or two years before that it was the the the
4:44
Risto trade so the Flyers had no first round pick we were just hanging out at Bullies we were like thinking about how
4:50
we could have been doing something but instead we have instead we have Raspus wrist lining so now we can't do anything
4:56
thanks Chuck Fletcher thanks appreciate it a lot there the gift that keeps on giving yes yes but uh yeah now we are uh
5:03
post the scouting combine we got some players there we got some grip strength we got some bike testing we got some
5:08
pull-ups there um so we have a new mockdraft to go over and critique uh we
5:13
do have a few flyers rumors before there to get started uh Maxim Shabongh is
5:19
apparently not going to choose an NHL team until after the draft and free agency according to RG media which has
5:26
been you know pretty reliable I think for for Russian news since it's really come into the the mainstream there um
5:33
yeah he's small but it looks like he's someone that can potentially score and you know help uh help Mechov maybe help
5:39
uh bring in Kurakov in a few years yeah I mean Shabbanov is he's really the
5:45
prototypical like KHL free agent uh lottery ticket he he can there's
5:51
definitely a chance that he can be a middle six like 50 point scorer in the NHL who's like a spark plug and and
5:57
really fun to watch he's a very interesting player he has some very interesting highlight reels right so it
6:03
would be it's intriguing and obviously it doesn't cost you anything so if he is to come over I mean you can cut bait
6:09
pretty easily uh if it doesn't go well um so there's really no downside uh besides I'm sure that it'll cause a stir
6:17
that h they're looking at another 58 5'8 for a whole a whole 5'8 uh making Bobby
6:24
Brink look like a towering man um I'm sure that'll get some rise out of the
6:29
the fan base if it does happen but it's really there's really no um there's no downside to it necessarily
6:36
it's just money you're not giving up draft picks you're not giving up anything of value it's just a contract
6:41
which you know people complain about being owned by Comcast but one of the great things about it is that they just
6:47
spend money and don't care they just don't care so um it'd be fun they'd have
6:53
a very small bottom middle six though brink Shabanov Pelletier
7:00
all tiny guys yeah there's it's it's not exactly a huge and there's not like
7:07
they're surrounded by huge players either like Noah Kates is not exactly a hulk of a man out there so maybe they'll
7:14
just trade for Tae Thompson like I've been asking him to do get the big get the big draft down the center there uh
7:20
but yeah looking at the KHL top scorers here uh Shabonov was third uh 67 points
7:26
in 65 games second was Nikita Gusev who had some time with the Devils and
7:31
someone else uh he had 69 points in 68 games then the top scorer Joshua Levo
7:36
who had a a nice journeyman career in the NHL has Josh Levo could have done it
7:42
so like Jordan Wheel up two these days the real deal last time so I was doing a
7:48
denim Moscow game i believe it was D Moscow and um wherever he is now and it
7:54
was the line was Jordan Wheel Gusev I believe and Cedric Pquette
8:00
and I was like this is awesome it's just some guys out here man they had Eric Odell you remember Eric Odell of
8:06
Winnipeg Jets fame um I don't I'm not apparently I'm not as much of a sicko as
8:11
you are i thought I was a pretty uh No he was a terrible hockey player uh really AHL guy i mean I have no offense
8:18
to Eric but he was not necessarily uh it's one of those guys you're like why
8:24
like the KHL the Russian guys just signing anybody who played in North America because like what what's Eric
8:29
Odell yeah they have they have a Russian guy who's better than Eric Odell come on come on couldn't even make the Three Ice
8:35
League that's a shame three Three Ice League should be a bigger thing i think there it was fun i
8:41
had a good time yeah it's just hard hard to market there jordan Wheel it was uh 22nd in the league in scoring for Dynam
8:48
he had 51 points in 66 games so wow that shows you you know the type of competition they're going against in the
8:54
KHL occasionally guys can come over and hit like Demod you know obviously he looked good um we've seen Pan Aaron come
9:01
over obviously ton of guys but um yeah Shabanov yeah you know I'd rather have him there in the bottom six or in and
9:07
out of the lineup rather than you know Tony Dick or Ole Lexel or whoever they had you know last year right yeah
9:16
he would be more exciting at the very least yes uh before we dig too much into the draft talk uh Jacob you have any
9:22
thoughts on uh Oh you I know you have thoughts on this guy Nick Hey uh apparently came out today more so that
9:28
you know they're kind of using this as leverage to get a better contract with Vegas but um the more I look at it I
9:35
don't want them and I'm pretty sure you don't want them either i I I don't really like it's this is the thing I
9:41
have like with the talk it thing as well um and even like bringing in his
9:46
assistants i I just I can't have like a really hardcore opinion on this stuff
9:52
like Nick Hey yeah he'd be fine he'd be cool sure what do you give up for Nick H like a third like a second round pick at
9:58
most at the very most probably overpaying uh and then you sign him to what 2.5 million for four years at
10:05
maximum like what and okay sure i I liked Nick Hey coming out of the draft i
10:10
I've seen Nick Heg play i think he's he's pretty solid um for if you're
10:15
trying to build a bottom pair that's big for the future i mean that he's he's not
10:22
the worst uh candidate and you know if you're playing for Vegas you're not a
10:27
complete bum if you at least get ice time right he's he's playing for an organization that knows what they're doing but yeah I I think it's more just
10:35
his agent and and the um whatever whatever system surrounds him just kind
10:41
of trying to use teams as leverage maybe the Flyers did have some interest in
10:46
Nick Hey at some point i'm sure they would have sure why not it's just like but it could also be just in in passing
10:53
in in a conversation with the uh Vegas GM just like "Oh yeah what would you look at for Hey or like if they're
10:59
talking about a bigger deal would you include Hey that doesn't constitute necessarily a concrete interest." So I
11:05
you know I just don't see to what end i don't know to what end would you get
11:11
this guy he's 25 right like he's not young young he's not young young but
11:17
he's also he's he's got if if you still had the Brad Shaw hangover and you
11:22
thought that you could take a defenseman and and make them into something more um
11:27
yeah sure maybe maybe he would be a a decent depth acu acquisition i don't
11:33
think he's a bad hockey player but No no no no it's just not anything I can you know it's just a guy if you sign in free
11:39
agency you're like "Oh yeah I got Nick Hey I wonder what he's going to do next year." But the Flyers have such a log jam on defense already i'm like but yeah
11:45
they've got these prospects in Lehigh Valley that need ice time why would you get Nick Hey like Risto is going to miss a couple weeks at the beginning of the
11:51
season sure but he's going to come back like where what is the point um so I I
11:59
don't know it just if you were trading out a defenseman I guess but trading out
12:05
any of the defenseman for Nick Hey would be a loss to the Flyers like maybe Igor Zamula is the only one where one for one
12:12
would make sense but I would say Heg might be a better player than Igor Zamula yeah you know like they're pretty
12:18
similar right it's not a huge gap in talent i mean Heg probably is better i
12:23
think you're right but again it's just a guy it's a guy that you can sign it's a depth guy it' be okay i I think it does
12:30
continue to say something about I'm not exactly sure that the future of Emil Andre is necessarily as secure as
12:38
some people in the fan base want to believe i think that with Jamie Ddale
12:44
really looking to fill that role unless he totally you know just proves that he cannot
12:51
step in and take it i think Andre is going to have a tough time getting back into that top six and not just being a
12:59
fringe piece 78 who comes in alongside let's say a Hunter McDonald uh when when
13:05
the team has injuries right i think he's he's closer to that classification within the organization than he is like
13:12
somebody who they want to maybe promote up to the top four at some point um but
13:18
yeah I think we'll have to see if they want to build a bigger bottom four defenseman um or they want to supplement
13:25
Dale with more big guys around him not exactly that you know York and Sanheim don't necessarily play small or big um
13:32
they're more neutral uh Sanheim is a big guy but doesn't necessarily play that way and you don't know as as we said
13:38
what what you're going to get from wrist to line so it makes some sense but at the end of the day it's not anything I would have
13:46
any hot take on uh that's gonna light the world on fire on the Nick Hey signing or potential
13:54
move yeah I thought about writing like an article like I don't want Nick Hey on my team but like I wouldn't hate having
14:00
him no yeah that seems a little too that's a little too much like I don't not want you on my team Nick it's not a
14:05
personal thing no I would maybe get I maybe give up a second i could maybe squint and see giving up a second form
14:12
you know if Keith Jones really likes him not having Brad Shaw definitely hurts that but you know yeah he gets ice time
14:18
in Vegas but looking at his you know most common partners over the past two years it's always a third pair like he's
14:23
never up there with Theodore never with Petrangelo never with even like Martinez or Hannah just it's just he's with White
14:30
Cloud or whoever else is uh I guess last year he he got some time with those with
14:35
those bigger bigger boys but mostly White Cloud sometime with Petrangelo but that was their only expected go that was
14:42
their worst expected goals 4% pair there just you know maybe a change of scenery can help and looking at the blue line
14:48
like there's a log jam I think more in the AHL than at the NHL because like right now you have Sanheim Cer Dales and
14:55
Mula York then you have Risto who probably isn't going to be healthy to start the season so then you have you
15:01
have five guys there andre is not going to fill the role of Risto so bringing in Hey if they don't
15:08
think Hunter McDonald is ready might be a move but yeah I'm not giving up
15:13
anything for him i'd rather get someone in free agency or you know if Hunter McDonald impresses enough sure let's see
15:20
what he got but um yeah if if Nick Hey doesn't cost much if it's like a third yeah whatever yeah i I
15:27
just I think you're right i think it's it's a fine move to make if you like the player but I think you can find someone
15:33
of the equivalent value in in free agency and we're already in the system yeah much less of a headache there's
15:40
Spencer Gil who he's pretty far away he's far away sure but he put on like 40
15:48
pounds since the draft last year he's not going to be a small guy if they're as high on Hunter McDonald as they want
15:53
us to think like so you go out you trade Hey you sign him
15:58
for the remainder of his RFA years and then he walks in UFA or you trade him like I just I just don't see the logic
16:04
i'm still not necessarily sure why they see Hunter McDonald as being that good like I don't think Hunter McDonald will ever be as good at hockey as Nicholas H
16:11
is like I I I don't think that matters necessarily to the point that we're making but I I still just don't see what
16:17
Hunter McDonald brings other than being a big guy who bangs around a little bit
16:22
i mean again is that Brandon Manning do we need another Brandon Manning i do not want another Brandon Manning i take
16:28
another Andrew McDonald before I take another Andrew uh Brandon Manning which may be controversial but I got McDonald
16:34
was a fine defenseman he's just not worth the money he's a fine third pair guy brandon Manning was like Robert Heg
16:40
robert Heg sort of syndrome i was gonna say if the McDonald Robert Heg if the Flyers get Nick Hey hopefully he wears
16:47
number eight and everyone can break out their the Robert Heg jerseys they're spelled differently though they're spelled differently just get some duct
16:53
tape you know it's it's fine there's going to be a lot there's got to be creative with the duct tape with the the positioning of the ha you have the h a g
17:00
then you replace the g with uee i fine yeah i mean [ __ ] I saw people on uh
17:05
Jamie Dale's first game in Prov jerseys with duct tape over the Provov and Dedale written in Sharpie on that so you
17:12
know yeah I've seen some uh number took the duct tape off after oh actually maybe I saw some number 79 fart jerseys
17:20
last year at the FAR those those were those were pretty uh pretty good probably the only potential way you
17:25
should be wearing that jersey especially um yeah anything else here on the rumors
17:31
egg um Rossi anything let's draft let's do draft marco get Marco Rossy i don't
17:38
get Get Marco Ross just get him i don't know get him just Just get him nobody wants him apparently you got three first round picks just get the guy i don't
17:44
know can't be that hard all right um for myself for the outbreak the podcast is going to an ad now but for YouTube here
17:49
let's just continue into the draft talk um we have the sixth overall pick we've
17:55
seen plenty of mock drafts um given the Flyers Dana A giving them Fondell giving them Martin giving them Hagens um what
18:03
are you guys thinking now uh Jacob you can go first you uh you're the guest there well see okay this is where things
18:09
have gotten really interesting for me um uh probably about a month and a half ago I I felt like I had a pretty good
18:15
consensus on like the top five players in the draft uh at the top Schaefer is
18:22
going one Misa is going two bar it's probably a 95% that Misa is going two at
18:27
this point three I more so put Porter Martone there because I thought that the fit with the
18:34
Blackhawks put him alongside Bard as a big playmaker i think it's just really harmonious fit there for the team and
18:41
then I saw Utah or Nashville utah could maybe look
18:48
somewhere else look towards a day or a fondelle due to the fact that Hagens is kind of just a repetition of Clayton
18:55
Keller and Logan Culie they already have two guys of similar archetype so for
19:00
Utah I felt it was more Fondell but Hagens if they just didn't care about the size and then if Hagens would have
19:06
fallen past their Higgins or Fondell whichever one did uh the Predators would
19:12
take them and that would leave the Flyers with uh some combination of of Caleb Denoier of Brady Martin maybe
19:20
Jackson Smith if you wanted to take a defenseman and and really make everyone upset um as as the the pick um if Roger
19:28
McQueen's injury uh history hadn't been clarified which kind of came a little bit after that so as at that point I
19:36
thought I was very certain as to where it was the draft was going to shake out but as we get closer and closer these
19:42
bigger guys up the middle seem to be it i I think it's actually a phenomenon
19:47
that I might want to start writing about like around playoff time like as people are watching the Stanley Cup playoffs
19:53
and how they unfold these bigger guys up the middle just seem to be growing in value your Fondell's of the world he
20:00
looks like he's at least a strong consideration for the Blackhawks at
20:05
three if not the pick um and and your Caleb Denoier of the world who had a
20:12
good mem Cup with with London uh with Monton they lost to London um he had a
20:19
good mem Cup with Monton and and has risen up some boards just as being a big guy who's kind of good at everything and
20:25
not great at anything and he started to to jump up boards to around the four five spot that I didn't necessarily
20:32
think he was going to get to i always thought he was going to be closer to like the 78 nines
20:39
that leaves the possibility that I didn't think was going to be really possible and that's James Hagens falling
20:46
to the Flyers at number six higgins was at one point the number one prospect in this draft and by a pretty wide margin
20:53
um he has lost that distinction after a year at Boston College which he had a
21:00
point per game but he was overshadowed by Gabe Perau and Ryan Leonard to a pretty heavy degree um and a lot of
21:07
scouts have soured on him especially being a bit smaller up the middle as a center and it seems like teams are going
21:15
to pass on him now i don't know if it's enough to get him from where I thought he was going to go which was 34 down to
21:22
six because to me it just seems like Nashville should take him like if he gets to Nashville it should be a really
21:29
easy pick for them to just take the most skilled player given that Nashville has
21:34
never really had uh a guy that was a super talented center you know they're
21:41
they're working with Ryan O'Reilly as their 1C right now that's that's a much different archetype than than Hagen's
21:46
and that just to wrap things up here as I go on my long longest tangent of the episode hopefully um
21:54
that to me screams Hagens there but with Barry Trotz as I was talking to Ryan um
22:00
prior to the show beginning with Barry Trotz as the GM his or just the the
22:06
Predators philosophy in general the last two years they've taken Jagor Surin out
22:11
of the KHL and they've also taken um Matthew Wood matthew Wood's 6'4 Surin
22:17
6'2 and really mean really heavy plays a big game i can really see them valuing
22:24
Martone over Hagens for that simple reason that they really want to make a big power for it and try to build one
22:30
out from uh their own system they're trying to do it right now with Svetchkov
22:36
who was also one of their later first round picks first or second round picks from a few years back um but yeah that's
22:43
what I think's going to happen there's a lot of moving parts here there's no I have there is no consensus any consensus
22:50
you see in the mocks right now is purely uh speculative because I don't I don't
22:56
see anywhere like the difference between Fondell and Denoier is like teamtote team preference on where they played and
23:03
how they played and like where these teams saw them if they saw Fondell at the U8s where he wasn't great or if they
23:09
saw him playing in the Alvesin where he was a bit better or the J20 national i
23:15
don't know i don't know man there's a lot of [ __ ] going on there's also the fact that Nashville has
23:20
three draft picks as well right they have theirs and two other firsts this year yes I believe they have at least
23:28
one other one 23 and 26 as well yeah 23 and 26 there you go so um they could go
23:35
with Hagens early and then get bigger guys later on they could also do the reverse they could also do the reverse
23:42
guy and then take Colin Potter or something you know yes that's the same
23:48
sort of thing I've been turning over in my head i mean for me go ahead Gilbs do
23:54
you think if Hagens is there at five and the Predators right now want to turn this around they're not rebuilding do
24:00
they think Hagens Do you think Hagens could be NHL ready to play second third line minutes with the Predators like
24:06
that's why I'm thinking maybe they take the swing at Hagens or even McQueen like they could reach for McQueen hope hope
24:12
he has like one more year or does he have he's going to be the big wild card he's going to be the big wild card i
24:18
think McQueen's probably still more five uh more six to 10 like I think he starts
24:23
his range starts maybe with the Flyers or just after the Flyers um I think a
24:30
team would sooner take a Denoy um over over swinging on a McQueen um
24:37
and that's again whether or not Hagens goes earlier than that because I don't
24:43
I'm not not exactly sure if the Predators are looking that way like it it's it's tough it's really
24:50
tough because you can see both sides it's really coming down to like how the scouts are thinking and like what
24:56
they're valuing i mean for Utah too they jumped up from 14 to four they might have not been
25:03
scouting in the top five because they just didn't think they were going to have that option so you know maybe they
25:09
fell in love with Brady Martin because they thought he would be available in the teens where they would have been drafting um I know you I know you said
25:16
McQueen would be like a post six one but there I don't know if there's I don't think uh what's his name it's not It's
25:23
Daniel Boot or Butt in the Utah system i don't He's a big guy right but I don't
25:28
think he plays center um I don't think he did i thought he was a winger winger
25:34
right yeah uh maybe they swing on McQueen they're like "Yo we've got all the players we really need but we don't
25:41
have an enormous center we take that swing on McQueen." Um I I just But I'm
25:48
with you it It could go anyway some people are projecting that it's Martone that drops because he's the less
25:54
vulnerable position and I from a Flyers perspective
26:00
if it's Marton versus Dayoy or Fondell I'm taking Martone which I wouldn't have
26:06
said a month or so ago but I've really come around on the idea of him at six but if it's Martone versus Hagens
26:14
well now we've got a really difficult conversation to have i think I think it has more posh probability to be Martone
26:20
versus Hagens than Fondell versus or do
26:25
Fondell be in the mix i think Fondell would be gone denoy is so tough for me i
26:31
Yeah I could see somebody just jumping i could see the Predators doing it
26:36
definitely he fits their mold he does um and he would play right behind Ryan O'Reilly in theory uh at least for at
26:44
least for like a year if they can get him up in time um it would kind of make
26:49
sense and it it feels like a Barry Trotz pick you know it feels like you kind of know how he liked to coach you kind of
26:55
know like the kind of hockey mind he is so it does feel like he it it with him
27:00
at the helm it feels like to me that Hagens may not be the selection and
27:06
again as as Gilb said if you want a guy who's gonna turn it around right right away you could maybe put Porter Martone
27:13
in the NHL after his college year next year like if you let him in go to college and and bring him in um at the
27:20
end of the season after the college season ends if you're hopefully you know as the Predators hope to are going on a
27:26
playoff push um that could be feasible probably more so than Hagens and and
27:32
Denoya especially like Marton is probably the closest player in this draft who is like ready for the NHL yeah
27:39
he could play schaefer missed all season there's no way he's NHL ready he's a string bean like he's going back to the
27:46
CHL no question misa maybe cuz he tore it up in the O and like I would put Misa
27:53
in the NHL i just think it would be more difficult for him to adjust as a center right off the bat then it would be
27:58
Marone as like a third line winger think he could be like Quinton Biffield like if a certain a type of mold obviously
28:05
Biffield was the center but like the big guy who isn't necessarily physical yet because he hasn't learned how to be but
28:12
he's got the puck the puck skills and his skating is a bit weak but he's got the puck skills that he can at least be
28:17
a contributor if you wanted him to it's tough but like Hagens there's no shot i
28:23
There's no world I see Hagens making the NHL next year um
28:28
uh who else fondelle i doubt it i seriously doubt it um
28:35
like Yeah of the of the top prospects the one I'm the lowest on is Fondell so
28:40
I am hoping he is off the board by the time the Flyers make a I think he will be um because it's Chicago that seems to
28:47
love him but yes hey I I mean I'm still holding out hope that the San Jose Sharks they want to get the brothers
28:54
together in San Jose they trade back to six so that they can draft Ecklund and
29:01
not use the number two pick on Eklund I think is gonna take a bit of a tumble I
29:07
think for sure if he's in the teens the Flyers should try and trade up for him if he gets down to like 15 like you make that move
29:13
just got a carbon copy of his brother right there yeah the thing with McQueen
29:20
I keep thinking about here as as you guys talking about like it has to it has to be a team that can sell it to their
29:27
fan bases like this guy might be a bust he He might just you know be injured he might not have a career i feel like Utah
29:33
can do that they're they're such they're so new to hockey they were They're a good team they already have good young
29:38
pieces it's like "All right we took a big swing here we can see if this guy pans out we can become a perennial
29:44
playoff team if not we still got a good young group still having still having fun with our 4% beers here in Utah." And
29:50
like I don't know if you can do that in like the Flyers at six or Boston at
29:56
seven i I could see it because they're trying to do like turn around but like a little bit like Seattle after they have
30:02
Shane Wright and what's the other guy's name uh Shane Wright Matty Baneer
30:08
like Berkeley Cton yeah like I don't I I don't I guess they could take a big swing because they already have those
30:13
centers uh Anaheim too um they have McTavish and Carlson and they could take the swing big um yeah so he could really
30:21
go anywhere mcqueen i But I would very much like to see the Flyers trade up to try to get him if he if he falls to you
30:28
know 11 12 prawnman Prawnman had McQueen to the Ducks at 10 um I I I would love
30:35
if he fell and there I I think there's a chance from like the 9 to 13 range that
30:42
like there's multiple defenseman picked just how it's kind of more like how it's
30:47
shaking out i think there's a certain drop off of Ford talent that might make
30:54
it so defenseman get a bit more valuable like to the Penguins or the Rangers
30:59
maybe you know um something like that the Ducks I don't think will take a defenseman because they struggled to
31:05
even play Mikov last year and Zelwagger at the same time they got a really They actually do have a really stacked like
31:12
just with bodies their decor is they got a bunch of guys there of course by the fearless leader in Radcoas who has to
31:20
play 35 minutes a night the captain the captain yes i need that jersey but I'm
31:26
I'm with you like I don't think trading from what do the Flyers have 21 or 22 at
31:31
this point it's 21 yeah 22 22 22 22 i
31:36
can't see them cracking higher than 15 like I feel like that 145 15 area would
31:43
be really tough for them to trade up into but if they can get someone at 16 or 17
31:50
then we might be in conversation like it's it's tough this actually Oh go
31:56
ahead look looking at that at like the draft order trying to find which teams would want to trade down like I I'm
32:03
always wary like the Penguins and the Rangers i don't think they'll trade with the Flyers there like the Red Wings are at 13 so I was they want a roster player
32:11
like a Owen Tippet type so the Red Wings actually have only one pick in they have one pick in the first second third
32:18
fourth fifth so on i was thinking you could if the Red Wings didn't love how
32:25
the draft shook out and their most coveted players were already off the board I could see something working
32:32
around 21 and what'll be like 32 plus another asset to get back to 13 it would
32:41
it wouldn't be cheap at all it would not be cheap at all it would probably like this is what something that like if if
32:47
Joel Farabe was still here if Joel Farabby made to the offseason it would be the two the two latest first Joel
32:53
Farbe and then you send him off could be Bobby Brink i have it i have who it's
32:58
going to be what state is Detroit in pop quiz Jacob uh Michigan who played at
33:05
Michigan that does not have a contract right now uh Owen Power no no York cam
33:10
York yeah Cam York yeah Cam York for Cam New York for pick 13 that could be a
33:16
package i'm not sure how the Flyers fill that hole on the blue line maybe they get Nick Hey but like the Red D Smith
33:22
and you immediately get the same guy again the Red Wings need help on defense they have they they just do they cider
33:29
and that's it um yeah I didn't realize they only have one pick for a while there that's a that's a good option
33:35
there at 13 um Canadians have 16 and 17 then you have the Blues at 19 they also
33:42
only have one pick in the first few rounds um so that could be a spot where
33:48
if someone falls to 19 the Flyers don't think he's going to go to 22 you you maybe do 22 and a second to move up to
33:55
19 yeah and that's probably more realistic than the scenario that I came up with i mean my my hope my hope is
34:03
that they will trade 22 to move up and then they will also trade 32 to move up
34:09
because the way the way the talent drop off at like pick 45 is looking is pretty
34:17
significant like it's you get to pick 40 or so and the drop off is looking pretty steep so if they can take the Columbus
34:24
and Calgary second rounders and use them to just move up into I don't know 13 or
34:30
14 and then 26 or something I'd be pretty cool with that but if they if
34:37
they're internal ranking of players has a ton of guys in their tier in that like
34:44
25 to 35 range then there's no reason to do it right so i don't know jacob since you're here are
34:52
are there any players in particular that you would love to see them draft at 22 and 31 considering how last night's game
35:00
went um or do not draft 31 um Bill Zanin's fun i
35:07
like Bill Zan i like Bill Zan late malcolm Spence has fallen off as of
35:12
recent i really like Malcolm Spence uh unfortunately he doesn't have that high of a ceiling uh Cullen Potter is really
35:20
fun i think everybody wants Cullen Potter he's just like the the speedy quick young guy who who kind of takes
35:27
everyone smitten uh pre-draft because he's just got such a good skill set uh I
35:32
actually like um I was putting together an article about some guys that I like
35:39
if I can find it i got like 800 tabs open but Cameron Reid also comes up for me as a guy that as a defenseman later
35:46
on if he if he was able to um make it there i would like Cameron Reed at like
35:51
21 and I don't think he'll last all the way down to the end of the first round
35:56
but the guy that I've really zeroed in on that I've really liked for a very long time in this draft later and he
36:02
seemingly has kind of tailed off is the excitement around him i really like Benjamin Kindle um okay i think he's got
36:10
a really he plays the game at a really distinct pace he slows it up he can
36:17
speed up the the the pace of the game really well um he doesn't look uncomfortable anywhere on the ice and
36:24
he's got a really good shot um along with being a very adept playmaker he's
36:30
always good at looking for his teammates i really like Ben Kindle it seems like he's kind of falling down to like the
36:38
20s30s range i think you don't even need to trade up for him and I think it would be a great little little selection um a
36:45
pick on upside try to get another guy with a big shot try to get another guy with some offensive dynamism in him and
36:52
yeah I think those are those are most of the guys that I think of like with those 21 to either 31 or 32 whatever that pick
37:01
ends up being but yeah as you said I think after 45
37:06
into the 50s you get to a lot of unknowns maybe not even poor talent-wise
37:11
but it's just a lot of guys that aren't necessarily big names didn't play
37:17
bigname places you're reaching more um more more of the SHL more of the Swedish
37:23
leagues and in the MHL and the USHL has been a complete disaster like the last
37:28
year like it's it's it's just not very good hockey and the guys that are coming out of there you're like "Ah you kind of
37:34
played a bunch bunch of kind of played against a bunch of bums at times and you
37:40
could get found out really easily when you go to to college somewhere right?" But yeah I think Ben Kindle is the guy I
37:47
would say could have the best value selection yep uh Milton Gastron Gastron
37:54
Gastrine okay so he's been mocked to the he's been mocked to the Flyers at 22 do
37:59
you think that's way too high for him i think it's higher than I would take him at yeah right i think he's a bit higher
38:05
i would be looking I would be looking like for the Potters to have dropped to that point right or or maybe like even
38:12
Blake Blake Fiddler maybe from the Oil Kingsman
38:17
would you would you consider Ravensburg Robinsburg so uh we were talking about this before the show I think with Gilbs
38:26
and it's like I would with I I wouldn't be angry if they took him with 31 or 32
38:32
like if they took him at the end of the first I wouldn't be I'm not going to get pissed off about it but I don't think
38:37
that if you I in my personal opinion if you wanted to take a goalie I'd take a swing
38:44
with one of the seconds on Ivan Kovich um cuz I really liked him at the U8s i
38:50
thought he was really good with Carter George like I thought they were both like when whoever was in the net it was
38:55
a very solid performance uh and he's smaller obviously right but Ravensburg
39:01
like if he ends up going with the 20 if you if you have to take him with the 21st overall pick or 22nd overall pick
39:09
um pardon me to get him I think that's I wouldn't do that too much yeah especially with Jarnerson and Zagen like
39:16
you're going to have to find a place for these guys to play at some point and then you're going to have another guy coming through who gets kind of lost in
39:24
the shuffle at times if if he and Ersume is not going anywhere anytime soon like
39:29
even as a backup option if he was to kind of fall off a cliff this year so yeah let me just hop in here on the
39:36
goalie talk i've been I'm loving this prospect talk i'm looking up looking these guys up on the elite prospects uh
39:42
draft guide while while you guys are talking about I'm like "All right this guy's got work." As far as a goalie in the late first
39:47
round early second round is concerned as long as they use use picks pick six to get you know a good guy they get some
39:53
someone else that it lines up well I would just love taking a big swing on a goalie like you think about it what are
40:00
the best goalies that have hit free agency in the past decade like Bob and people hated that contract until two
40:05
years ago until last year like goalies top goalies don't hit free agency they
40:10
don't even get traded rarely like you can go out and you can get a Mitch Mner a John Tvaris uh Capri off or whoever
40:17
else a a forward or defenseman in free agency a lot easier than you can get a goalie if a goalie is good a team locks
40:24
him up and you have your goalie for the future whether it's a 60 start guy or a
40:29
guy that you want to have 5030 with you know a tandem a bit but I'm I'm kind of leaning now more towards go out try to
40:37
get as many goalie tickets as possible and hope that one hits because like even if these goalies don't hit it's fine
40:44
like we've seen plenty of first round picks not hit anyway and some of these guys maybe not the the 65 guy but the
40:51
guy from uh from Michigan I think he's at right um he's going to Michigan yeah
40:56
yeah and also as as Thomas mentioned you know tra trade trade a second for Wallstead they hold their value we saw
41:02
that with Ascarov ascarov got traded for a former first round pick and another pick after you know only having a little
41:09
bit of time in the NHL and AHL so like get as many goalies as possible become become a goalie factory have Danny
41:15
Brriier turn this whole organization around from having no goalies to having all the goalies like that's that's how
41:21
you win all the goalies oops all goalies i mean we have the saying right ABDG always be drafting goalies um and the
41:28
Flyers are in a unique position i am generally like don't use a first round pick on a goalie that's stupid but they
41:34
got three of them like if if it works out that they're gonna make all seven of
41:40
the picks in the first two rounds where are they going to get the ice time for those skaters why not use one of those picks on a
41:46
goalie like I' I'd use I'd use a second rounder on a goalie i don't think I
41:52
would like to use a firstrounder on a goalie just because I I mean even even
41:57
then like a 30 a 31 or 32 is not it's not like even really a first round asset
42:02
in that way but I just think like as you said the the talent drop off is there
42:09
like it's real it's not like there's going to be a lot of second late second round steals that guys will be that
42:14
teams will be trading up back into the draft to try and get uh unless there's some dramatic fall from like the first
42:21
round for someone like Ryabkin um then you can maybe take a look but yeah I I
42:28
just I don't think any of these guys are better than Zagan uh and you use the second on Bejnison
42:35
mhm these guys are going to be there i I get having the pipeline going but I just
42:40
don't think it's a a pos because it's going to be so far down the road too right like you're not Ravensburg and
42:47
isn't going to be playing for two threeish years longer i would bet you
42:53
longer i I don't think like that's what I'm saying you you've got If you haven't
42:58
figured it out by that point [ __ ] well I mean I I wrote about this for
43:03
broadstreet hockey right uh like and subscribe that goalies unless they're elite level starters like the Vasalevkis
43:10
the Hella Bucks they don't get good NHL time until they're like 26 like 25 26 um
43:18
and if we're looking at Zrain if he follows the Sroken or Shurken path
43:23
Shurken didn't come to North America until he was 24 sroken didn't arrive until he was 25 neither goalie played 50
43:30
plus NHL games until they were 26 years old if we project Zroin in a similar vein let's say 25 he starts a year
43:37
earlier that is the 2030 season that is the 2030 season i think Zrogan just
43:43
turned 20 so we're looking at the year after Shanqurier's contract has expired
43:49
that Zroen might be getting it is basically an eternity so um I just
43:56
think if you draft a goalie this season or this summer they wouldn't even be playing in the NHL in a meaningful way
44:02
until 2033 which you know that seems like a madeup year but it it just unless
44:09
they're an elite starter um and as far as who the Flyers would pick my money would be on Medvidev just because they
44:15
are so familiar with them because he's the goalie for the London Knights um but I wouldn't take him in the second i I
44:21
would probably wait till the third i think he might be there in the third round that's what I'm saying too as well right like I wouldn't take Ravensburg
44:26
and I've seen Ravensburg and play at Prince George like a little bit here and there i watched a game my last day I
44:32
watched a a game where he had a shut out against I don't remember who he had a shut out
44:38
and I was I remember I was sitting there I was like "Yeah he's making a bunch all the saves but it's just like it's not
44:43
necessarily any gradea chances at all." Um and it's not as if the numbers in the
44:50
W are ever like eyepopping for anybody that's just kind of how the CHL is as a
44:55
whole but I don't think he's like 10 times better than a Medvidev or Ivan
45:02
Kovic i think he's got the frame that really excites people which I understand that for sure all of the best goalies
45:08
usually have that frame nowadays yeah but again I I don't think he's like a
45:13
guy you need to sell out for at 22 i would really advise against that
45:19
personally but I think I mean again I can't you can only get so upset about it
45:25
if if you're able to like get a Van Saggy in the in the second round or something or somebody who falls
45:32
really far down i don't know yeah i mean if you get a Van Sagi in the second round you just
45:38
take take a goalie at six i mean that's it's but in kind of similar kind of similar to the
45:45
Van Sagi I just had not heard of him before so that's fine he's good
45:50
but he's kind of similar to McQueen like taking a goalie in the first round has
45:55
to be by a GM that knows he might be around for five or six years and like
46:00
Briier I think is one of the few there here on Tankathon they have him going to the Blue Jackets and they just had Don
46:06
take over as GM so that could Makes sense the Blue Jackets have had a very long leash for their GMs in the past
46:14
like I don't see him going to like these teams that you know maybe Nashville after trading away Ascarov but some of
46:20
these other teams like they want that's where Prawn Man had him was uh Nashville at 26 yeah that that would make makes
46:26
sense there um I don't really think I want him at 22 but like if you trade up from 31 or 32 to those mid to late 20s
46:35
maybe but um yeah I just feel like why not why not take a swing it it why not
46:42
you have you have seven picks in the first 50 or whatever well hopefully they're able to trade up or swap them
46:48
for help now but I I wouldn't it suck if for the draft
46:54
party they trade the two other two first round picks and we're like "Well [ __ ] we came here for whatever." They did it
46:59
last year they traded the Florida pick for Edmond they'll at least they'll at least make one pick at least yeah we
47:04
won't we won't we won't have to wait around you know an hour or half an hour or whatever it was for their first pick
47:10
we'll get the first pick out of the way because I Yeah last year's draft party definitely waned a bit towards the end but um No this this draft I don't maybe
47:19
I'm just like too into the weeds at this point but it seems so mushy
47:25
after like the top 15 where there are guys that I really like but then I'm like would I take him at 22 i don't know
47:32
i feel like I could still get them at 32 like Bill Zonan for example I'm like I'd love to have him on my team but I
47:39
wouldn't take him at 22 unless all of the other guys that I wanted are already gone like it's it's just I don't know
47:45
this this draft feels super fluid yeah and so much is going to depend on how
47:51
the board falls ahead of the Flyers like a lot of it is preference too yeah mhm
47:56
and we know the Flyers preferences we know what they look for um they look for Caleb caleb i actually am a big day fan
48:05
i might be the I might be the biggest I I just I I'm not upset about how he plays
48:13
i just can't get too excited about it as a top 10 prospect i think because I
48:20
can't project him to much more as than a second line center personally i mean the
48:25
the thing that's been so frustrating about the mock drafts is that they all these writers still see the Flyers as
48:31
like trying to reconstruct the bullies and they're like "Yep they're going to take Jack Nesbbit and Milton Gastron at
48:36
the 22nd overall pick and then they're gonna Brady number seven." Yeah and overdraft Simon Simon Wang at 31 or
48:45
whatever and it's it's frustrating because the past two drafts they have not followed that philosophy at all and
48:52
nobody has No nobody has apparently noticed yeah
48:57
are there any are there any guys in like that you know late first round range that you wouldn't want the Flyers to
49:03
take at either 22 or with with her last pick like are there are there some other avoids you guys have out there or just
49:09
like either wouldn't be happy with reapkin i wouldn't take him in the first
49:18
like you take him last pick of the first round I'm not going to again i'm not going to be upset it's hard for I I don't want to like I'm a big firm stance
49:26
on who I hate in the draft like Prawnman has here Brisitz from uh the Knights
49:34
going 28 to the Jets like I don't I wouldn't take him at 28 like he's just one of the lower tier
49:41
London Knights defenseman i mean he's a good he'll probably be a solid hockey player um he'll probably be a solid
49:46
defenseman in the NHL it's just not somebody I'd take in the first round i think you get better value on him somewhere else
49:54
I would I'm not a huge Nesbit guy at like but like if the Flyers get him at
49:59
their pick I don't think it's bad either so I I'm I'm kind of out on Lynen Lakovic as well i don't I just I don't
50:07
see it i think that would be an underwhelming pick at 22 if he's still there in the second round then sure but at 22 well I I think I think with
50:14
Lakovich you're also looking at a guy who if he's there at 22
50:20
he fell a long way from where he was probably supposed to go like he's a mid- teensish type of guy like if he gets
50:28
there it isn't a bad value play is more what I'm saying right like a lot of these guys that are
50:34
mocked around 22 or around 30 the 30 range I think um a lot of them if they
50:42
get there it's a pretty good value right a lot of these guys I could see Blake
50:48
Fiddler going 25 I could see him going 17 I could see Nesbbit going 15 I could see
50:55
him going in the second round like realistically a lot of these guys same with Bumidi
51:01
Horov like I'm just looking through Procarov like these guys all could go in the second round feasibly like if they
51:08
fell on the day um they're not slam dunks i think Bomidian probably is a
51:14
first round guy at this point but they're not they're not slam dunk first round guys there's a lot of preference
51:20
um from the scouting staff so there's not anybody I look at and say stray away like big red X do not select at the
51:30
moment would you gamble on Mason West he's the high schooler who might get uh
51:35
football offers for the NCAA i don't I
51:40
don't see why you need to do that yeah see so there you go there's one there's one where you're like when is he mocked
51:47
in the first though like he's more of a second round guy oh in the second I'm talking in the second yeah yeah well in
51:52
the second round again it's as like we've said the whole time it's really it gets really murky you get to the back
51:58
half of that second round man mhm like Brisitz to me for a long time he was a
52:07
midsec round guy and now I'm seeing him pop up in the first and I'm wondering if that's just because of the mem Cup and
52:14
which like yeah I mean I guess it helps that he was on that team but you know
52:19
you have Sam Dickinson and Allen and Bonk Bonk Barky all the defense alone is
52:26
unbelievable uh Woolly is drafted by Jared Woolly is drafted by the Kings
52:32
like I think everybody on their decor was drafted besides Britz um and and
52:37
maybe the guy that played with him on the on the bottom pair but like that's the thing a lot of these guys
52:44
it's so fluid i I I don't really have anybody that I I wouldn't look at and say "No don't take them." I' I've got
52:51
more of those feelings with the six pick than the lower two i mean it's going to probably be similar to 2023 when we got
52:57
to pick 21 and Gabe Perau was still on the board and they went with Bog you know it like we won't be able to be mad
53:04
about it until we see who's available and then they make the pick and we could be mad that they didn't pick the guy that we wanted them that's legitimately
53:11
a perfect way to like if Braden Coots is there at 22 and they take
53:17
a Ravensburg and I'm going to be upset i will i'll be upset yeah i was looking at Cootz's like draft
53:23
profile on Elite Prospect he looks he looks great looks like a like a oneman forjecking machine he said or something like that get that get that to play for
53:31
good he's he's the type of guy that I think would if you if you get him you
53:37
can kind of you can be take more of a swing with number six because Coots I think is just
53:42
such a solid middle six kind of guy that he'll play in the NHL i do you think
53:49
he'll stick at center uh maybe I've got some faith it's tough with a lot of the
53:55
guys it ends up where they land too right if they're trying to force them there it's the same it's a similar
54:00
question with Cole Rashny I think too if he sticks at center I think he's got a better chance to stick at center than
54:05
Coots but I think they probably both could they both play they both have that work
54:10
ethic right so I think as long as you have that you can be a third line or a second line
54:18
center and not be the the biggest the biggest player on the ice but a second
54:24
line wing if it works out that way would be Yeah I think that's I think that's that's fine too i don't think you're
54:30
going to complain about that if you get it at 20 at 15 to 20 overall you're you're going to be laughing to the bank
54:36
if you get that so I I think it's a little bit overblown when you get down to the to the 20s like the center wing
54:41
discussion like if they're good enough you can find a spot for them uh even if they can't stick at center yeah you can
54:47
you can usually make it work if they has the requisite skill if if they have the requisite skill set I think be okay so
54:53
yeah i mean not a ton of guys late that I'm too upset about i would even there's one I really like Carter Bear too i know
55:00
he was injured but I would if he's there at 15 in the same way that Ekkan would be available at like 15 or whatever I
55:06
would I would probably be looking to trade up to get him because natural left winger
55:13
jacob do you think Fondell sticks at center or is that more of a a landing spot thing because he's the guy that
55:19
played wing what in the SHL but then played center at the junior level yeah it's a bit tougher he's he's playing up
55:25
with men in the SHL if the Blackhawks take him I think they want him to be the
55:32
second line center behind Baddard who's more of a a compete guy more of a 200
55:38
foot game guy um and I think I put this actually in my in my mockdraft article
55:44
that'll come out soon probably within this week uh and I I I was reading some
55:51
stuff that suggests that the Blackhawks maybe don't trust Bedard's ability to
55:57
gain some of those traits on his own so it might be more feasible for them to
56:02
take either a Fondell or a Denoier who have those like like right out of the draft they have the ability to play both
56:10
ends of the ice and and play a bit more meticulous game off puck uh than Bard does so I think if they
56:18
take him I think they'd be totally fine obviously if he was to just be like the sniping winger that played alongside
56:24
Bedard and whoever they put on the other wing I think again that's totally fine but I think they want him to develop if
56:31
the Blackhawks were to take him they would want him to develop as a center now if you're looking at I think it's
56:37
the same with Utah and I think it's the same with the Predators i think I was going to say they could use him like Dry Cidle in um Edmonton he plays 2C behind
56:46
McDavid but when the chips are down they put him on the top line with Yeah and it's not crazy to me like all you look
56:53
at the Blackhawks they could use a winger but they're prioritizing that second line center and then Utah and and
56:59
Nashville I think they both need centers that's why it was initially so surprising to me that Hagens was starting to fall originally so I guess
57:07
they don't necessarily view him as as a center at the NHL level but what what about for like the Flyers if the Flyers
57:13
somehow get Fondell or I guess in the same question if it's like Fondell versus Hagen somehow like if some team
57:19
goes way off board those two guys are there are you looking at Hagen still or do you believe that Fontel you know his
57:26
inflation his draft stock is is worth doing so this this is what what I have
57:32
as just a push back to the Hagen sort of his his continued falling down draft
57:39
boards in general um the general consensus
57:45
if you put Anton Fondell in the NCAA or if you put Porter Marone in the NCAA or
57:50
if you put Michael Misa in particular is the guy I was I was thinking of in the
57:56
NCAA i think Michael Misa still does better like is still the pick that is above Hagens this past year judging off
58:03
of what I saw from Misa and how he's really grown his game as a centerman but I think a lot of these guys look a lot
58:09
worse if they're in the scenario that Hagens was in i know he was playing with good lineates but the competition is
58:15
much higher uh on a game-to-ame basis in the NCAA and it was his first year and it's not
58:20
like he was horrible he just wasn't as amazing as people expected him to be so
58:28
I I I think I still lean Hagens i think I still do i think I I see him even if
58:36
he was to move to wing as a higher skill ceiling than Fondell because you've seen
58:41
it on North American ice in big tournaments
58:46
fondelle did not look that good for Sweden at the U8s he was kind of tired
58:53
yeah yeah he was just kind of around um obviously it is the end of the season
58:58
like Joe said like it is it's hard to judge necessarily a lot of these guys he's been shuttled around he's been
59:04
shuttled around a lot of teams he's played a lot of different levels so he just unrelegated his team in the Alvinskin back into the SHL right like
59:11
Eklland yeah rangers no I'm pretty much with you i think Hagens is my top choice of between
59:20
Dayoy uh Fondelle but I if Martone is there I'm having a
59:27
real tough conversation i think I'd still lean Hagens if it's between him and Marton but that's a because I talked
59:33
to Gilb about this on our last pod marton is such a good passer and
59:39
playmaker in a way that the Flyers need and he also scores all of his goal not
59:44
all but most of his goals from right in front of the net which is something the Flyers suck at they need a guy who can
59:49
do that that would help the power play so much to have a guy up in front of that net um it makes everything so much
59:56
easier that's why it's been such a frustrating thing for me that they haven't even tried to address the net
1:00:01
front on the power play really with anyone in particular they put Risto up there they put Risto up there that one time yeah let Let Zoola slam slap shots
1:00:09
off Risto's chest for another season yeah no I I it's it's Higgins for me but
1:00:17
if Martone is still there alongside Higgins boy am I having a difficult difficult conversation how about you
1:00:23
Gilbs i I I I think I like Higgins higgins was was the one going into into
1:00:28
the year if he's there for the Flyers I think you have to take them and and it's sounding a lot like last season where we
1:00:35
were like "All right Flyers are at 12 it was a clear top 12 or 15 the Flyers are gonna get one of these guys and they
1:00:41
didn't and this year it seems like could be Brady Martin time exactly it's got very well be Brady Martin time it seems
1:00:47
like don't put that out here near top six with Schaefer Misa Martone Dana Hagen's friend then you have Brady
1:00:54
Martin going up the ranks you have Jake O'Brien going up the ranks for some reason um Roger McQueen is healthy maybe
1:01:01
he goes in the top top six like I like O'Brien i I there's a lot of qualities
1:01:07
there that I like but I I my biggest fear is it goes Schaefer
1:01:13
Misa Fondelle then it goes either Denoy or Martone and
1:01:19
then one of the other guys goes fifth that leaves Hagens to the Flyers they pass on Hagens to take Martin mhm yeah
1:01:29
so I think that is a genuine possibility what's the deal if they had to pick between Hagens and Martin they would
1:01:35
pick Martin what's the deal with with Brady Martin here how should we be feeling if that does happen he's a dog
1:01:42
number one dog got dog per 60 is off the chain with this guy no he's good like
1:01:48
he's he's he's definitely a guy I think that if you get him around 12 to 15 you're like psyched about like
1:01:54
what he could become as as a as a middle six guy but it's six would be six is
1:02:00
kind of crazy malpractice almost kind of crazy
1:02:05
worse than worse than Luchenko over Bou i'll I'll put it that way i think if you drafted Brady Martin at six and off of
1:02:12
consensus off of consensus I think Luchenko is actually worse because Martin has jumped up so far but maybe
1:02:18
skill ceiling wise yeah i mean Martin's got some good traits to like about him but it is I don't know man this is a
1:02:26
little off topic but on the subject of Luchenko um every year Cory Ponman
1:02:32
releases like the industry chatter from the combine you know talking to scouts and executives anonymously and getting
1:02:38
their read and at the end he does like a poll of who's the best skater who's the best competitor blah blah blah blah blah
1:02:44
and I went back and looked at last year's and Jet Lochenko got votes for best skater and I think best competitor
1:02:51
so it wasn't like he was off the radar of the scouts in like the way that we might
1:02:57
have considered him to be off the radar of the Flyers so uh it's just interesting to see a year later how
1:03:03
things Yeah in hindsight that makes a lot more sense than we knew in the moment for sure in the moment
1:03:10
in the moment it looked absolutely insane but after the draft it started to come out that like yeah he probably would have went in the teens yeah before
1:03:18
getting back to Martin here I've been thinking about writing up like what does the Flyers lineup look like right now
1:03:24
and I've been struggling like do we think Lucenko still has like a slam dunk
1:03:29
3C on the roster or might they send him back to the to the hoe
1:03:35
um can they trade him in the O that would be preferable i would like to see them trade him to a contending team
1:03:41
please that would be cool yeah i I think he's still got to play personally to me
1:03:47
I think you got to put him in the lineup i know it's not necessarily like Oh in the NHL in the NHL oh okay in the NHL i
1:03:56
think he's got to put him in the NHL you got Coots you got Kates you got Paling obviously you know Kates and Paling can
1:04:02
both play wing i think you could put Luchenko on the wing if you really wanted i No I don't think they would
1:04:09
that No no i think if he's in the lineup he's going to be a center brian Paling
1:04:15
is not like a center that you need to have be a center either like yeah he can be like you can be whatever i don't
1:04:22
think they're going to put Kates lower than 3C they're not going to put him on the fourth line after having his his
1:04:27
contract there but like if they go out and get like a Rossi or if they go out and get a Granland or Duchain or one of
1:04:33
these guys in free agency you have you have that guy you have Coots Kates Palin
1:04:40
put Palin on the wing whatever like Luchenko isn't nearly as much pencled in so I guess it makes I mean it we'll see
1:04:47
what they do at the draft and what they do in free agency because they're not going to do much until then because they want to have all the all the flexibility
1:04:53
and leverage at the draft it's really funny you bring up Michael Granland because it's out in the news today that
1:04:59
Oh yes scars would trade Jason Robertson to resign Michael Granland which is just
1:05:05
[ __ ] crazy it's stupid as hell but it's Jim Nil i know he's not going to do that he's not that stupid but I probably
1:05:14
trade they'll trade Michael Granlin for like the first overall pick or they'll trade Robertson for the first overall
1:05:20
pick it's like oh yeah okay i guess if you can do that I mean I mean that's fine why not that makes sense so yeah I
1:05:25
I want Brea to call Dallas and be like "All right you know ask about Robertson." Be like "Oh Wyatt Johnson minus 15
1:05:32
all-time worst in the playoffs how's how's he looking jake how how's he feeling?" I guess I guess Dbor's gone so
1:05:38
Dbor's gone yeah won I think he won that power struggle very easily i don't know why ever thought he was going to win
1:05:45
that that battle and York would get along so well yeah they're both American right they both probably came up uh
1:05:51
similar times in the US NC debate well no cuz Andre was 2017 and York was 2019
1:06:00
so Andre might be a little bit too old for them to have played together yeah yeah yeah but you know same same uh same
1:06:06
coaches same uh same you know system there um Yeah we'll discuss that more as y'all season moves along getting back to
1:06:12
Brady Martin looking at his elite prospects a draft guide profile it just says you know top six initial outcome
1:06:18
hinges on skating development and skating has been the one thing where the Flyers feel pretty confident like that
1:06:25
they can fix it like we saw that with Forester um someone else too i forget who but like Forers turned into a force
1:06:31
on the on the line there so um you know Martin I wouldn't hate getting him but just
1:06:37
looking at these other guys that will likely be available at six he might not be a center he might not be an NHL
1:06:44
center and then you're just getting a overdrafting a wing and if it's between Martin and Martone and they pick Martin over Marone I'm going to be like what
1:06:50
the [ __ ] are you thinking like that's Yeah kind of
1:06:56
succinct way to put it i I like Martin's game like I like the just heaviness he plays for again is that going to
1:07:03
translate when the guys who are on defense aren't playing for the Flint Firebirds
1:07:08
like you know I don't know maybe he just looks good running rough shot over a bunch of random
1:07:15
defenseman right i like I like how he looks i just don't know what much more
1:07:20
he can develop his game than what it is right now if you I don't think he's necessarily slow and if you think you
1:07:28
can you know get his his skating tool to a point where it's at least league
1:07:34
average or a bit above it's not bad but again there's a lot of work to do and a
1:07:39
lot of things have to go right to make him worth a six overall pick even in a draft like this where the back half of
1:07:44
the top 10 isn't a bunch of slam dunks but I mean it was interesting in Ponman's um not mock his rankings today
1:07:54
though top 125 he says uh let me pull it up here as the season went along the
1:08:00
2025 draft class began to look better it's still a slightly below average group without true star power at the top
1:08:06
other than Eerie's Matthew Schaefer but this top 10 group projects to produce numerous highquality NHL forwards
1:08:14
so and again I just want to butt in quickly i I don't understand they did
1:08:20
this with Celerini last year and there no one would admit it i do not understand how you don't think Michael
1:08:25
Misa has at least some chance of being an elite forward in the NHL i just I don't I don't understand there's just a disconnect with me and everyone like I I
1:08:32
don't know why you need to put the caveat in like oh well it's only Matthew Schaefer well I think Misa can be just
1:08:38
as if he ends up being an 85 point second line center on a really good team is that is that That's pretty good no
1:08:46
like that's good that's 85 points that's a one seat for this Flyers team are you
1:08:51
I was just saying that cuz he's probably going to have to play behind Mlin for the entire career if everything goes well over there right it can be Thornton
1:08:57
Pavvelski part two also I feel like every year we hear "Oh this is a below average draft class." Like unless
1:09:02
there's a McKenna or McDavid like every year it's like oh you know next year's class is better
1:09:08
i I just feel like the bar is too high there's always going to be great players coming out of every class it might just
1:09:13
not look that way listen we got spoiled in 2023 and 2024 okay 2023 you had
1:09:19
Bedard at the top Mechov and then you also had Fantully Carlson and Will Smith who were all really exciting center
1:09:25
prospects like the top 10 of uh 2023 was pretty exciting last year you had what
1:09:33
eight defensemen who were all pretty damn good or pretty high projection and
1:09:38
Celbrini to cap it off at the top like and another Russian phenom and Deidov like this year it just doesn't it's kind
1:09:47
of the comedown from two years of exciting prospects at the top of the draft you know um doesn't mean it's bad
1:09:53
but yeah it's not it's it's not even Schaefer at the top is not slam
1:10:00
dunk franchise playerad you know very good yeah yeah i think that's a good you
1:10:07
know if he makes as much of a difference to a team as Aaron Eblad does over the past 15 years of his career um I solid
1:10:14
number i think you're very upset about that at all matthew Schaefer could also use steroids
1:10:20
he can consider that just like Yeah he could consider that as an option i didn't think of that before but he can
1:10:26
definitely he could think about maybe getting some trend mhm yep no we have to
1:10:35
remember then in 2014 no when was Eklad drafted 20 2014 yeah it's it's 2014
1:10:41
draft they're showing that picture of all the top four draft picks uh right who went number three that year was that Bennett
1:10:48
was that Reinhardt nope last one Reinhardt was after it was Dry's title it was dry who is clearly the number one
1:10:55
draft pick of that class in retrospect right but that could be good for uh who's third oh no it's Chicago oh crap
1:11:03
we didn't know Germany made hockey players at that point though no still got it wrong with Mo Cider too oh yeah
1:11:10
AJ Purka mhm tim Stutzla yeah I mean they got a
1:11:16
got a good starting five at the very least isa German I thought he was Swiss oh I think Stutla's German german
1:11:24
i haven't been reading too much recently into the mockdraft stuff i I'm planning on doing that this week for a mockdraft
1:11:29
roundup kind of all over the place anyways yeah but is the talk of Hagens going to his hometown team is that kind
1:11:36
of just over now or what the Islanders that'd be Yeah no they'd be they'd
1:11:41
That's kind of what I assumed for a second there it was there it was there yeah it was like all right Hagens you know and I can't imagine the Islanders
1:11:48
trade down or anything so nah [ __ ] no that was any good player any good player
1:11:55
my most hated team my my face when I saw that they won the first overall pick I
1:12:01
was just It's the worst thing i don't have any hatred towards the Islanders cuz I just don't think about them ever
1:12:07
like it's just like why would you Matthew Barcel just playing for the Islanders it's just like gh and where
1:12:14
was Barcel drafted he was like the 15th 16th pick so he was he was after that
1:12:20
run of three Bruins picks where they took Jake De Brusk and Zachary Seshan who was
1:12:26
a fourthline center for the Sue wow so that's actually worse than Brady Martin because at least Brady Martin was the
1:12:31
second line center for the Sue oh man oh god what a world that would
1:12:37
have been where if Boston Imagine Boston could have had De Brusk Barzal oh they
1:12:43
they would have reddrafted it's Kenkne Connor and Matthew Barczel
1:12:49
imagine what world we'd be living in i would have been We would not have Brad Marsham giving the Edmonton Oilers hell
1:12:56
it's like the multiverse it's like the multiverse i think it's worse i think we ended up in the good reality yeah who do
1:13:02
the Flyers get if connecting is not there i mean I don't I don't know who who was drafted i think uh Spraw was in
1:13:08
that draft i was looking at at that earlier actually update wrong
1:13:13
who was after one sprawn for Kknne olovic anthony Bilier uh oh man I
1:13:20
thought Bavilia was going to be good he still could be sebastian Aaho second
1:13:26
round there that's that was a steal which Sebastian Aaho the good one the
1:13:32
the one that was drafted yeah uh speaking of trading down do you
1:13:38
guys think there's any chance like one of these top five picks trades like we hear about it every year like this this
1:13:45
team's thinking about it but they have to think about it they have to have all the options on the table but I I can't
1:13:50
see can't see it happen sharks no the Sharks sharks for Yeah absolutely no
1:13:57
they they won't do it yeah it just seems too The top five is so just like you're
1:14:04
getting a good player just you're gonna get a guy who's pretty good i don't think you're going to
1:14:10
really get that many assets for trading out though either right because it's not like they're game changers i don't think
1:14:16
What is somebody going to give up to be able to draft Porter Martone like is it going to be a huge huge haul i think it
1:14:24
would be a pretty decent amount of you future picks and stuff i don't think you're getting like a a roster player
1:14:30
who's of of a very high quality though so I mean until until the San Jose
1:14:35
Sharks make the second overall pick I am going to be I'm going to be like it's happening and when it happens at the
1:14:42
draft party you should all come i'm going to lose my mind yeah i mean the
1:14:47
Flyers are the team that could trade up because they have the six pick they have 22 they have 31 32 they have three early
1:14:54
second round picks so like if there's a team that's four bets yeah so if there's a team looking to trade down and the
1:15:01
Flyers have their eyes on one of those top guys maybe maybe they do it maybe Danny gets a little bit spicy i'd love
1:15:06
to see it but I just don't see who wants to leave that spot to vacate that spot flyers definitely
1:15:14
have the assets to do it though yeah maybe like Joe was saying with Utah because they want you know a guy down
1:15:20
the board more but um I went straight up to four i don't think there's any value in that depends who falls it depends we
1:15:26
didn't see Becket Senica going third overall last year so you I mean that's that's what I'm saying like if there's
1:15:34
no way Misa reaches six i don't think he reaches three like if he falls to the Blackhawks they would take him in a
1:15:39
heartbeat i I can't see a world where he falls to the Flyers at six you would be trading up to two to trade into a
1:15:46
different tier to trade into a higher tier of player if you're trading from six to four you're still probably in the
1:15:52
same tier and getting one of the players that you already would have gotten at six but now you've given up assets to do
1:15:57
the same thing i I just I guess it depends who falls but I bet you if it's
1:16:05
I don't know if the Flyers are that high on DOY and they know that Utah would get him then I could see it but I don't
1:16:12
think they would give up a bunch of assets just to draft Calabino if they can still get Higgins at six or Martone
1:16:18
at six i just it you'd have to trade up to a higher tier to make it make sense
1:16:24
what What does Danny Brriier always say it has to make sense i need that shirt i need that on a shirt yeah and I mean you
1:16:31
look at the teams like the Sharks and the Blackhawks they want the top talent they don't need many more many more
1:16:37
prospects in recovery like Utah maybe and it also depends on what the Flyers internal rankings are if they have DOY a
1:16:44
lot above Martone or vice versa or whatever if they have like Schaefer Misa
1:16:50
and someone else in that top tier and then someone else is there at four at four and they think that he might go at
1:16:56
four or five they could trade up but it it just doesn't happen teams don't trade for first first round first top 10 picks
1:17:04
nope not unless you're the Ottawa Senators getting Alex Debrink yes yes
1:17:10
all right here at the hour 17 minutes here any anything else you guys want to discuss before we close this thing out
1:17:16
go Panthers um I'm going to give you guys I don't know much but one thing I
1:17:21
do know is that the Buffalo Sabres are going to draft Redeem Murka and do the Rasmus wristo wristan thing again so
1:17:29
watch out for Ratty Murka in like 2033 he won't be good there though all right
1:17:36
but he will be on the flyers by then we will trade more assets for another really lanky uh right-handed defenseman
1:17:42
from the Sabres who is not that good unfortunately I get I hate to extend
1:17:48
this longer but which of the um between the top three defenseman Kashan Herson
1:17:55
uh Jackson Smith and Murka which one do you think is most likely to fall and
1:18:01
would you trade up into the teams to draft any of those three i like Jackson Smith overall game the most he reminds
1:18:08
me basically exactly of Travis Sanheim i was talking to Thomas about that earlier from Broad Street Hockey still that's
1:18:14
what EP says that Yeah yeah it's it's you just watch him he looks like the exact same guy it's it's really not that
1:18:20
hard to make that comp it just he just skates like the way he flips his hips when he turns from skating backwards to
1:18:27
forward it's so weird um so I like his to toolkit the most mka's a big wild
1:18:33
card but he's a right-handed shot defenseman who's tall so I'll punch you a ticket for at least $12 million in
1:18:39
career earnings um Kan Herson I really love him when he was going in like the
1:18:44
20s I was like full boore the Flyers need to draft him but he's jumped up the boards because he's a really tough and
1:18:52
really well-rounded defenseman he can do a lot of things he he has a big compete level and he throws some of the hardest
1:18:58
hits I've ever seen uh unbelievable level like especially nowadays you don't see those anymore and then they're not
1:19:04
even dirty he's just lining guys up and like trying to obliterate them off the earth uh it's it's kind of crazy so I
1:19:11
think he necessarily doesn't have the the top pair ability of a Smith but he's
1:19:19
got that extra edge to him that so like if you if he fell to like 15 16 I would
1:19:24
love if the Flyers went up and got him but I think at this point he's been exposed to enough like teams and again
1:19:30
as we go through the playoffs physical defenseman he's going to end up heading
1:19:36
up on the boards he'll go early yeah yeah i think he'll go just after the the 10ens and all those defenseman I think
1:19:42
will go in that in that seven to maybe 16 range so um I don't think the Flowers
1:19:48
will have much of a chance at any of them uh unless they took they took a reach a big reach at six or traded back
1:19:54
in so until that happens can't really dream on any of them right now because HSN has firmly uh cemented himself
1:20:02
outside of that range for 22 if HSN was still there at 21 or 20 or 22 I would be
1:20:08
running to the all in i would especially if you get a centerman at the first pick
1:20:13
set you up perfect i love it big um him and Bonk on the second pair for the next
1:20:19
20 would be unbelievable I think sheesh anyway um all right yeah that's a great
