There are a lot of different microphone choices for a home recording studio, whether you want to live stream on Twitch, record your guitar and singing or just sound great on Skype calls. Few companies have more pro-level microphone experience than Beyerdynamic, however, and it shows with its new Fox USB Microphone. Tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ demonstrates the Fox microphone and reviews it in this video, finding it a solid addition to any recording setup. Dave Taylor here and I'm looking at this
0:13
this is the beyerdynamic Fox USB
0:16
condenser microphone it's pretty cool
0:18
actually so let's pop off the windshield
0:21
comes with it and here's the microphone
0:24
and it's actually on its little desk
0:26
base so you screw it in and then you
0:28
have all these different adjustments on
0:30
terms of angle and you can turn it and
0:32
the goal is to have it positioned so
0:36
that it's approximately a 90 degree
0:39
angle from the front of the microphone
0:40
to your voice easy enough now comes with
0:44
lots of controls on it but the controls
0:46
are a little curious so on the front
0:49
there is power and then that actually
0:51
acts as a mute button which is very
0:53
handy and then below it you have a mix
0:56
between computer source and the
0:58
microphone and then below that you have
1:00
headphone volume and then you plug in
1:03
headphones so you actually get the
1:04
volume now when I first looked at this
1:07
I'm like where's the second input source
1:10
and the answer is when you plug it into
1:11
your computer or your phone it will work
1:13
with phones the they say just Android I
1:16
haven't tried it out with an iPhone but
1:18
that would be something worth exploring
1:19
but when you plug it in you can play
1:22
music basically into it using it as an
1:24
output device you don't hear anything
1:27
unless you plug it headphones and so
1:30
then you plug in headphones and you can
1:31
hear you can adjust the mix between the
1:34
headphones and mean the original music
1:37
source and your microphone why is this
1:39
great sing-along karaoke later if you're
1:42
doing multitrack recording you can
1:45
actually have all the tracks playing
1:46
through the microphone while you're
1:48
recording the next track that you're
1:50
getting out of the microphone and since
1:52
you have the headphones jack and since
1:55
it's a zero latency headphone then it
1:58
really works really well so you'd plug
2:00
in the headphones and now you're ready
2:03
to go and if you're doing multitrack or
2:06
anything like that and there's some
2:07
fantastic stuff out there people have
2:09
done even at home but you can do that
2:11
really nicely with the
2:12
now on the back is the odd thing on the
2:16
back is the gain control but it's not a
2:19
dial with all these dials and all these
2:22
different controls you would think it
2:24
was but it's actually just a high-low
2:26
gain switch so you get to choose between
2:28
the two
2:29
what beyerdynamic recommends and what
2:32
I've found works really well is leave it
2:33
in high mode unless you're getting
2:36
really really loud source like if you're
2:38
playing trumpet right into this that's
2:40
probably gonna max it out so then you
2:42
can put low gain but that's all you got
2:44
low and high switch why they don't have
2:47
some sort of dial why it's not in the
2:49
front with everything else it's a
2:51
mystery but be that as it may those are
2:54
all the controls now how do you connect
2:56
it with your you know with your
2:57
recording source or your input source if
3:00
you're using music - and that's through
3:02
this this really cool orange USB cable
3:05
the microphone itself works with USB C
3:08
so you plug that in and now you're ready
3:12
to go with that end and then the other
3:14
end is just a regular old USB 3.0 so
3:17
it's the rectangle and that will fit in
3:19
just about any computer you want to put
3:22
on what people would generally call a
3:24
pop shield but you can also call the
3:25
wind shield whatever so that when I do
3:29
that kind of thing it doesn't become
3:31
this loud explosion on the microphone
3:34
people that do recording know exactly
3:36
what I'm talking about it's a tricky
3:38
piece now to actually use the microphone
3:41
then I'm gonna actually hook it up to my
3:43
Macintosh and then we're just gonna use
3:45
audacity because it's probably not the
3:48
optimal piece of software but it is free
3:51
and that makes it a real win so let's
3:54
get this all running and assuming my
3:57
computer wakes up there we go mmm almost
4:00
there we go so now the microphone is hot
4:03
and I'm gonna put on the headphones so I
4:05
can hear what's happening and so now I
4:10
actually I sound better than what I
4:13
don't have my headphones on so it has a
4:15
really nice tone to it and what I want
4:17
to do is I want to actually record so
4:20
first thing we have to do is we have to
4:22
make sure that the input is from the
4:24
microphone
4:25
and once we have that then we can go
4:27
into audacity and audacity let's see so
4:32
it already has this as its input and let
4:35
me just make a couple of quick tweaks
4:37
and then we'll come right back okay so
4:39
we're ready to go we have audacity setup
4:42
we have the microphone setup we've said
4:44
as the input on the computer and I'm
4:47
getting a nice feedback loop it's nice
4:49
echo and it sounds really cool actually
4:52
so what we're gonna do is make sure here
4:55
it is on the Fox and then we have the
4:57
input volume all the way up that's good
5:00
and now I'm just going to press record
5:01
and let's see we'll point this right at
5:05
my mouth just to make sure we get the
5:07
Mac optimal positioning and this is a
5:11
sample of the audio from the biodynamic
5:14
Fox microphone what do you think
5:18
now gonna stop and so you've heard all
5:21
that through the microphone that I use
5:23
for my video let's go ahead and listen
5:25
to that audio directly off of this this
5:28
is a sample of the audio from the
5:30
biodynamic Fox microphone what do you
5:33
think so that's what that sounds like
5:36
and it's pretty cool so let me go ahead
5:39
and turn off the recording and I'll come
5:41
back and tell you a little bit more
5:42
about the microphone so there you have
5:44
it now let me get them headphones off
5:46
and these by the way are the
5:47
beyerdynamic t51p modest little
5:52
headphones they sound dynamite totally
5:54
separate let's get back to the Fox
5:57
microphone now we've tried it you've
6:00
heard a sample let me tell you some of
6:02
the specs it's a 24-bit microphone at 96
6:05
kilohertz 20 to 20,000 Hertz range 98
6:09
decibels dynamic range it has a big
6:11
diaphragm condenser with a cardioid
6:14
pattern so you really want to face front
6:17
it's not gonna sound good from back
6:18
there and the headphone output like I
6:21
said is zero latency it's rated from 16
6:24
to 80 ohms these are approximately 60
6:27
ohm headphones it's what they say if you
6:29
use way higher ohm headphones like 250
6:32
studio monitors or something then you're
6:34
going to just have some sort of funky
6:36
issues with how much volume you have to
6:37
get but you can deal with it we talked
6:40
about the control so mute button gain
6:42
switch for loud sources the wind or pop
6:45
shield the USB cable and I gotta say the
6:49
coolest looking USB cable I think I've
6:51
ever seen it's really nice now on the
6:53
packaging they have this whole thing in
6:55
their ad campaign where they shape the
6:58
orange cord to look like a fox I am NOT
7:01
gonna be able to demonstrate that in
7:02
this video cuz I don't think I could do
7:05
it but the whole thing really it's very
7:08
nice and this is a really nice choice
7:11
for you if you're a musician or if you
7:14
are doing podcasts or anything like that
7:16
it really just is easy simple to work
7:19
with very portable as you can see once
7:22
you pop the wire off this is pretty easy
7:25
to carry around in your bag or a
7:27
briefcase or suitcase or something
7:29
and
7:30
and boom you're ready to roll super easy
7:32
and I find that the sound quality is
7:35
very nice i hope that you heard that in
7:37
the sample i used because that's still
7:40
you know we're getting a lot of
7:42
translations of the sound by the time
7:44
you're hearing it so when i'm monitoring
7:46
the original it really does sound very
7:49
nice there's a richness and warmth to it
7:51
that you really look for in a microphone
7:53
so basically the only other thing to
7:55
talk about is the price and you might be
7:57
surprisingly happy about the price
7:59
because for something at this level and
8:01
with this quality of audio it's really
8:04
pretty much in the budget range which is
8:05
great
8:06
but before we get to the price do me a
8:08
favor and click on subscribe and if you
8:11
are doing podcasts or you are doing
8:12
audio or doing voiceover work or
8:14
something leave a comment telling me
8:16
what microphone you're nuoc using now
8:18
because it'd be interesting to compare
8:19
them anyway so biodynamic fox USB
8:23
condenser microphone it's a hundred and
8:26
seventy nine dollars at biodynamic but
8:28
with the tiniest bit of research online
8:30
you can find it at a hundred and forty
8:32
six eighty four at amazon.com and that
8:36
is a pretty darn good deal for the
8:38
microphone and stand and pop or
8:41
windshield whatever you want to call it
8:43
and obviously the USB cable you need to
8:45
be able to hook it up to your computer
8:47
or with the right adapters hook it up to
8:49
your Android phone so I say this is one
8:52
definitely worth checking out
8:53
I'm already a big fan of biodynamic so
8:55
that's not a huge surprise but I think
8:57
they did a really nice job with this the
8:59
only complaint I have as I already said
9:01
is I don't really understand why the
9:03
gain is a high low switch instead of it
9:06
being actually something where you can
9:07
dial in the game that you want so with
9:10
that one caveat I say this is worth
9:12
checking out and I'm gonna get back to
9:14
some recording so that means I'll catch
9:15
you in my next video
