A MedAlert bracelet is useful if all you need to convey is an allergy to penicillin, but what if you want to have all of your medical records with you in a safe and encrypted manner? That's what the SelfSafe USB Bracelet tries to deliver, but as tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ explains, this first iteration on their product might not be quite ready for prime time... A bracelet with a hidden USB drive? Let's check this up
0:12
Dave Taylor here, and if you're like me, you're looking forward to the time when you can start traveling again
0:18
But traveling comes with information risk. Now, there's a number of other areas in our lives where we want to carry around information, but we worry about losing it
0:28
For example, medical information. Now, wouldn't it be really handy if you have medical issues when you end up in an emergency room
0:36
if they have access to all of your medical data immediately? Now, that's where this ostensibly comes in
0:45
This, on my wrist, is the self-safe USB bracelet. Let me take it off and show you the secret
0:51
It looks like just another rubber friendship bracelet sort of thing, but hidden underneath it is an ATSB bracelet
0:58
8 gig USB flash drive. Now, the flash drive, it does support using encryption software
1:06
and I'll show you that in just a second. But the idea is that there's a lot of information you can put on here
1:12
You can put medical, financial, travel docs, scans of your passport, insurance documents
1:19
If someone steals your smartphone, a horrible thing to happen, but where's all your data
1:24
If someone takes your wallet and your backpack while you're backpacking through Nepal
1:28
or something, what do you do from there? Well, with this, assuming they don't notice it
1:34
and they assume they don't take that off your wrist too, which they probably wouldn't
1:38
So if you still have this, you still have a digital copy
1:42
of all your data, and you don't need internet access. Plug this into a PC, and as you can see
1:49
there's a couple of files that are right there in the clear and open, but if you double click on that start self-safe
1:56
it launches a program called EasyLLLLLLLL, which requires a password once you enter the password you then have access to a lot of hidden data on this device That one thing that really important to notice is that you can put data in the clear on this
2:12
So I think that it's actually two levels of access. So you can have some data that anyone can get to
2:18
It might be your travel itinerary with all the phone numbers and the addresses of all your hotels, for example
2:24
Or it might be public facing medical data that doesn't have any big issues with confidentiality if someone else notices it or reads it from you
2:34
Then you have the encrypted data, which you can put on here. And that encrypted data, you can actually have password protected
2:43
And so if you don't give them the password and they don't use that easy lock decryption program, they can't even see the files
2:50
Now, they can figure out that they're there. They can find the encrypted sub-directory, but they can't open the individual files to actually see your personal data
3:01
So that's really cool. And one of the things the company does is they do have a nicely organized PDF that you can fill out
3:10
You can see a shot of it here that you can fill out with all of your data
3:14
So if you want to spend the time, you can go through step by step, save all of that data, maybe do it for someone or loved one or something
3:22
put it on here in an encrypted format and then they're safe to go
3:27
So there's a lot I like about this. It is completely waterproof
3:31
It's 8 gig of storage, which doesn't sound like a lot, but if you're not saving your favorite 50 movies
3:37
which would be a complete misuse of this technology, but if you're using this just to save documents and data
3:44
8 gig is plenty of space. And it's certainly quite affordable and quite reasonable to purchase
3:50
But, as I said, the question is, have they really thought this thing through yet
3:56
And I feel like maybe they haven't quite. So number one, if I put this into a Macintosh, I can see the public data
4:05
I can get to the encrypted data which is kind of interesting because EasyLock the program actually has a Mac compatible version but SelfSafe doesn include that so their comment is we working on the Mac side of things
4:18
I assume at some point that will show up, but the bigger issue to me is the design of the whole thing
4:25
By having it look like this, it makes me think, well, are they trying to compete with like the medic alert sort of things
4:31
and if so, then why doesn't this actually have meaningful data on it that might say you're allergic to penicillin, right
4:39
If I'm unconscious, how do they know my password? So I can have, you know, absolutely critical, life-saving data on here, but if I'm unconscious, they can't actually pop it off and figure out what the heck all that data is
4:54
So that's where a public, open-facing version of that document might be important
5:00
But then you think, hmm, that could be a lot of data just to put here
5:04
And if I lose my bracelet or someone takes it or something, then I got kind of a big problem
5:09
Which leads me to my second observation is that I wish this looked like a really cool piece of jewelry
5:16
It looks kind of dorky, guys. Sorry, I think it would be pretty obvious if someone was going to take all of my personal possessions
5:23
they might be interested in this. Whereas if it just looked like, say, even an inexpensive medic alert
5:30
sort of bracelet, then that would be something they're much less likely to want to be taking
5:34
or much less likely to be interested in. And then if that happened to secretly have this little 8 gig of device storage, that would be
5:44
pretty sweet. So, I guess, my sort of overall summary of this is that it's a really interesting idea
5:52
but I feel like this is Rev 1. And I think when they do their second generation of this product, it's going to be
6:00
really interesting. I really like the concept behind it. And I like the idea that I can have all of this data
6:07
neatly tucked into this device that on my wrist And as long as this stays on my wrist I always have backup copies of my passport my plane tickets phone numbers for everyone that important
6:22
maybe important medical records, financial data, my tax returns, I don't know, whatever the heck I want to put on this
6:29
I would have all of that safely encrypted, and then it's just sitting on my wrist
6:34
But they got to think through use cases, and I feel like they haven't quite done that yet
6:39
And honestly, assuming you don't lose things, you could have a lot of data on your phone because that's what we all carry around too
6:46
So the question is, how does this serve you over and above all of those situations
6:53
So definitely worth checking out, but I feel like the next generation is going to be the winner here
6:59
So let me talk about the price. But before I get to the price, I'm going to ask if you can subscribe to my channel, as I hope is very obvious
7:06
I am really honest and candid. I'm not going to just hype up a product because a company sent it to me
7:11
It's not really how I play. So please, if you could subscribe, I will promise you that I will give you the straight scoop on everything I look at
7:19
And I look at and have access to a ton of products and devices
7:24
So with that in mind, this is the self-safe USB bracelet. It's 2995 at self-safe.net
7:34
Definitely worth checking out. Go on their site and look at their video. might actually, you know, they present things in a slightly different way and that might be more interesting to you
7:43
But from my perspective, based on my idea and my thoughts on use cases, this is an idea that needs one more rev before it's really fully ready for prime time
7:54
That's all I got. I'll hope to catch you in my next video
