If you're still suffering dead spots and slow Wi-Fi at home or your office, it could well be the hardware you're using to build the network. A single base station has fundamental problems and even adding repeaters is only so good. The latest tech for strong, even coverage is what's called a Mesh Network and Zyxel has a strong entrant with its Multy X AC3000 system. Tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ tested it out by deploying the Multy X system in his own home, a complex network topology with over 30 different Internet of Things and security devices online. Here's how it worked and what features - including parental controls - it offers... Learn more: https://amzn.to/2GYDHV5

Dave tale here and I'm looking at home
0:12
and office Wi-Fi networks now I'm in my
0:15
home and I have a really pretty
0:17
complicated home Wi-Fi installation
0:19
because I have 30 to 35 different
0:21
devices connected at any given time this
0:24
is the secret challenge of a smart home
0:26
she's got a lot of devices so I've tried
0:29
a lot of different Wi-Fi networks and
0:30
most of them haven't worked very well
0:32
it's like they work up to a certain
0:34
number of devices and then they just
0:36
start to sort of sputter and run out of
0:38
steam which is why I was interested to
0:40
try this now this is one of two units
0:42
this is the XY's l multi ex-ac 3000
0:48
tri-band Wi-Fi system it's a mouthful it
0:52
is a mesh network and there are two of
0:54
these and they're in fact the exact same
0:57
device which is kind of interesting but
0:59
one of them you set up as the base and
1:01
the other one and actually you can have
1:03
two more they work as we'll call them
1:05
repeaters but they're not repeaters
1:07
because the whole thing becomes what's
1:08
known as a mesh network and a mesh
1:11
network is way cooler than having one
1:13
really powerful unit or having repeaters
1:16
and we'll come back to that now let me
1:19
tell you about the XY's L units
1:20
themselves because they are pretty
1:22
sophisticated they run off of a qualcomm
1:25
IP q 401 9 quad core cpu with 512 Meg of
1:31
ram and 4 gig of flash memory they have
1:35
nine internal antennas so you look at
1:37
this and you're like yeah but mine has
1:39
these cool antennas coming out of the
1:41
back so this is not as good now this is
1:43
way better and you don't need those
1:45
antennas to be sticking out if we pop
1:48
this thing open I'm confident we'd see
1:50
all sorts of antennas all over the place
1:52
also on the back has a USB 2 port and
1:55
here's what's more interesting and so it
1:57
also runs Bluetooth so the configuration
1:59
is really super easy you plug this in
2:02
you start up your smart phone app and it
2:05
sees the device and then does basically
2:08
all the configuration almost all the
2:09
configuration automatically then you can
2:12
do the fun stuff like
2:13
what the name of your networks gonna be
2:15
and set your password you should always
2:17
have a password I don't even want to
2:19
hear that you don't have one and then
2:22
the app gives you lots of other features
2:23
too so for example I can see all of my
2:27
connected devices and I can choose one
2:29
and here's Ben's phone if I want I can
2:32
go ahead and put on parental controls
2:34
that are based on time or based on where
2:36
they access and such so I can turn off
2:39
his phone access to the Internet
2:41
via our network at 10 p.m. every night
2:44
if I want so even if he sneaks his phone
2:46
he's still not going to be able to use
2:48
it so that's pretty cool the other thing
2:50
you can do is you can run speed tests
2:52
and one of the interesting things about
2:54
the speed test is that they have what
2:56
they call a back-channel and this is a
2:58
super important part of the whole mesh
3:00
network sort of topology is that when
3:02
you have two of these one of the really
3:05
important issues is how fast do they
3:07
communicate the idea of a mesh network
3:10
overall is that devices are handed off
3:14
seamlessly to the most powerful unit
3:16
based on where they are and where your
3:18
units are so if I have my laptop or my
3:22
phone and I walk around the house it
3:25
should just magically transition back
3:27
and forth between units which is cool
3:29
but that means the connection between
3:32
the base unit and the satellite unit
3:34
need to be really fast and not only does
3:38
the XY's l actually have really fast
3:40
connectivity there and the back channel
3:43
is actually running at about 966
3:46
megabits per second at the theoretical
3:48
maximum but you could do a speed test
3:50
and you can find out so you know you
3:53
have two different networks running and
3:54
you have a third secret one just between
3:57
the two devices to make sure
3:58
everything's as fast as it can be now
4:01
let's see what else can I tell you so
4:03
it's a 5 gigahertz back channel between
4:05
them and five gigahertz you can also use
4:08
that for connecting and you should for
4:10
any devices like a laptop or a streaming
4:13
television unit anything that needs a
4:15
lot of bandwidth because 5 gigahertz
4:17
runs at a theoretical maximum of just
4:21
under watt one gigabit per second so
4:24
it's 966 megabits per second
4:27
by contrast the 2.4 gigahertz Network
4:30
which is sort of the old-school Wi-Fi
4:32
and that's perfectly good for most of
4:34
your IOT your speaker systems you know
4:37
all of that kind of stuff is gonna work
4:39
just fine that runs at a theoretical
4:41
maximum of 400 megabits per second so 5
4:45
gig is more than double the speed mod
4:48
you know depending on how you have it
4:49
set up in your home depending on what
4:51
you're have coming in in the first place
4:53
but these units are gonna give you lots
4:55
and lots of speed now the app like I
4:58
said has all sorts of really neat
5:00
capabilities on your smart phone and it
5:03
also gives you diagnostics and it's all
5:05
remote - so if I'm away from home and I
5:09
just have this sense that my kids are
5:11
going crazy online I could shut down my
5:13
entire network now that would be
5:16
probably a little bit overly aggressive
5:18
because all the IOT this the alarm
5:20
system the motion sensors all of that
5:23
would then go offline - so there's that
5:27
works with a unified name and password
5:30
for the Wi-Fi system so you don't have
5:32
to worry about
5:33
oh wait well I'm upstairs so I think I
5:36
need to collect or connect to satellite
5:38
one you just don't worry about it and it
5:40
just works magically and it
5:42
automatically connects to the fastest
5:44
unit super-nice in fact when I unplugged
5:47
this satellite unit everything in the
5:49
house just connected to the base unit
5:51
even if it was slightly slower because
5:53
it was further away so once I plug this
5:56
in it will reconfigure itself and all
5:58
the devices will reconnect at the faster
6:01
connection rate now what else can I tell
6:04
you it has a built-in firewall it's ipv6
6:08
compatible important for the future
6:10
network monitoring Diagnostics all there
6:13
here's one that's really important it's
6:15
Auto firmware updates and that's
6:17
important because every so often there's
6:19
an exploit in the wild that ends up
6:21
being a problem and so this will make
6:23
sure that your devices are updated as
6:25
quickly as possible I already said that
6:28
it has some really good parental
6:29
controls and it also lets you set up a
6:31
guest Wi-Fi which then sort of separates
6:34
that out from all of your main Wi-Fi
6:36
connections and all of your devices
6:37
that's a smart idea
6:39
on the back you can see that it has a
6:42
that's either power reset button it has
6:46
three ethernet jacks and one that you
6:49
use to connect it to your for example
6:52
cable modem and then you have that USB
6:54
2.0 and I can't show you here but
6:57
there's actually different colors that
6:59
it gives you feedback it'll turn orange
7:01
or blue or white and so you have a
7:04
little bit of feedback on the device too
7:06
but generally it's just gonna sit under
7:09
your table under your office desk
7:12
whatever it is it's there just gonna be
7:14
mostly just hidden away and zipping
7:16
along it is also integrated with Alexa
7:19
so you can actually say Alexa do this do
7:23
that
7:24
turn off the network things like that I
7:26
haven't actually done that because I
7:27
don't want my kids doing that just as an
7:29
experiment you know you gotta be careful
7:32
with that stuff and they say it supports
7:34
up to a 5,000 square-foot house I do not
7:37
have any 5,000 square-foot house that is
7:39
a lot of square footage but really to me
7:42
the more important question is how many
7:43
devices does it support and I've had up
7:45
to 40 devices on it at one time and it
7:48
seems like it works just fine so I also
7:50
want to point out that the package you
7:53
get actually contains you can see on the
7:55
side here it's two different units so it
7:58
comes as a set and it's ready to roll
8:00
and there's no real complicated
8:03
configuration you unplug your existing
8:06
Wi-Fi base station you plug one of these
8:09
in you put the other one wherever you
8:11
want in your house and then you use your
8:14
smart phone with the multi app to
8:17
actually configure the whole thing via
8:18
low-power bluetooth and that's done by
8:21
you know I did I just let my phone sit
8:23
on the device until it actually
8:25
synchronized up but it just has to be
8:27
within a couple of feet and then it's
8:29
all super easy with this and you're good
8:31
to go I would guess from out of the box
8:33
to up and running maybe five or ten
8:36
minutes depending on how complex your
8:37
configuration is possibly even faster
8:40
and then you're done and that's it
8:41
that's all you got to do so I am a big
8:44
fan this is working really well in our
8:46
office and our home and it's giving us a
8:49
lot of nice connectivity so
8:51
what I got for you now before I tell you
8:53
the price can I ask if you can click on
8:55
that subscribe button really appreciate
8:57
when you subscribe to my channel cool
8:59
now
9:00
the XY's l multi ex AC 3000 tribe and
9:04
Wi-Fi system mesh network will cost you
9:08
two hundred and ninety-nine dollars for
9:10
the two units starter set
9:12
that's this so you'll get two of these
9:14
and you will be good to go with your
9:16
mesh network
9:16
super easy two hundred ninety nine
9:18
dollars at amazon.com go read the
9:20
reviews to people like this thing so
9:23
this is Dave Taylor
9:24
I better go plug this back in and
9:25
maximize the performance of my own
9:27
network which means I'll catch you in my
9:30
next video
