Test your vision with this device in your smartphone
0:03
Let's check it out. Dave Taylor here and I'm looking at something ridiculously cool
0:15
This is the IQ Vision Check. And this little Bluetooth device coupled with an app on your smartphone
0:22
lets you test your vision at home with no schedules, no doctors visits, no waiting until your appointment
0:31
and considerably less expensive too. Super cool. Now, one warning is that this works best if you're 27 or older
0:38
So using this with your kids isn't going to give you great results
0:42
There's a lot of reasons for that, but suffice to say, if you're an adult, this is going to work great
0:47
If you're not, then this probably isn't going to be a solution for you. But what this is, is this is an automated refraction test
0:55
And what it does is basically it gives you a green and a red line
0:59
in your line of vision and then you adjust things to get them
1:03
to perfectly overlap and then it's solid yellow. It does that for nine different measurements on each of your eyes
1:10
You do that three times and then it gives you an eyeglass number
1:14
which is sufficient for you to be able to order glasses or contacts
1:18
How cool is that? It also gives you what's known as Near Vision Ad or an NVADD+
1:25
and that's a number that will actually let you go and buy readers
1:29
or progressive glasses straight off the shelf, right, so you can get them from the local drugstore or something
1:34
All of that from this little tiny device. It's amazing, really. It identifies nearsightedness, farsightedness
1:41
and it works with astigmatism, though if your eyesight is pretty far off the measure, then this might not be that good enough
1:49
for those real extreme situations. That would be something you might double-check with the company
1:54
but super cool. So it is a Bluetooth device. It pairs with your phone
2:00
That process is super easy and it has three buttons on the top
2:04
and the first two buttons closest to the eyepiece move the two lines
2:08
so when you're looking at the two lines, the first button will move them closer
2:12
the second button will move them further away, because if you go too far, then moving them further away
2:18
will get them perfectly lined up. And you basically just do that for each of nine different angles
2:23
and then it can figure out what's going on. So amazing. So those are those
2:29
Then the frontmost button basically is the I accept this, go to the next one, so that's a progress button
2:35
And then on the side there's power and then there's charging and it's a USB-C charger
2:41
So let me open the box and show you what else is inside. There is a strap because you strap this around your phone
2:48
to make sure it stays in the right place. A USB-C charger, very handy, and I like that it's USB-C
2:55
A product manual, a lint-free cloth, and the other super cool thing is a PD-Check glasses
3:03
And what these are is these are a special pair of glasses frames
3:08
that if you look, you'll see that they have a T symbol in three places
3:17
And basically you put them on, and I know they make me look very fashionable
3:22
and take a selfie in the app. And then within the app, you then adjust its crosshairs
3:28
to match these three positions. It identifies where your pupils are and it gives you what's known as a pupillary distance measurement
3:36
Amazing, really, right? And that's just with this and your camera on your phone
3:41
I mean, why are opticians so expensive and so complicated, right? So with all of that, oops, actually let's keep this out
3:49
because we're going to run a test. But let me just tell you just a tiny bit more
3:54
The output of this, like I said, is an eyeglass number. This is not a prescription
4:00
This is not actually replacing an optician. This is just a way to do vision tests
4:05
and get glasses and stuff super easy from home. But it does give you that near vision numbers and everything
4:14
So, you know, it's definitely pretty dang cool. And so the pricing is a little funky
4:22
I'm not a super big fan of that because this has a base price
4:26
And then for more than one user, you have to pay an additional subscription fee
4:31
Now, it's only $4.99 per person. So if you have a family like me where it's me and three kids
4:38
then that's still only 3 times $4.99 additional, which is collectively way less, you know
4:45
including the cost of all this hardware, it's way less than one visit to the optician
4:49
So can't complain too much about that. But you should know that they actually do that
4:54
And, you know, some people are rather taken aback where this isn't for the family, this is for one user
5:00
So not a huge crisis. And then you obviously need this, but you also need a reasonably modern smartphone
5:08
It works with iPhone or Android, but your screen needs to be at least 250 pixels per inch
5:14
which means super low cost Android phones and older iPhones probably don't have sufficient screen density
5:22
Check their website at iq.com to find out if your phone is supported if you're worried
5:29
So, cool. Let's actually go ahead and use this. Now, it's already on, so that's good
5:35
So I'm going to just launch the app, and let's go back to the beginning
5:39
I don't know why the app... Let's see. Okay
5:50
I was halfway through a test. I shouldn't have done that, right? So here we are. I've already done the test
5:56
So here's the result I have. And it's showing me my spherical, cylindrical, and axis for my left and right eyes
6:03
and it's giving me a pupillary distance of 70... I think it's millimeters. I'm not sure
6:08
And that NVADD is plus two. Yes, I wear glasses when I'm reading
6:13
How it goes. But now we know all those numbers. To run a test, you actually just push test
6:20
and then I'm going to just go ahead and repair the device with my phone
6:26
and we're good. And so now I'm at this point, and now there's a little box
6:30
And here's the key idea. Put the buttons on the top, and then take your time to place this perfectly centered
6:39
So there we go. And then we just use this little band
6:43
It's sticky already, as you can see, but we use the band to make sure it doesn't move around at all
6:49
So that's it. We're ready to roll. I'm going to turn the volume on, because it's kind of a chatty app, and that's okay
6:56
So first thing I have to say is, have I removed my eyeglasses and contacts? Yes
7:01
Do I have a screen protector on? Yes. That's actually pretty important
7:05
The app needs to know that so it can actually modify a couple of things
7:09
And then you can either go directly to an actual test. You have to do three full tests to get your results
7:16
Or you can do practice, and the practice is really cool, because you can stop halfway
7:22
You can let one of your kids try it if they're wondering what you're doing, Again, this is not for anyone under 27 to get really great results
7:29
but I know my kids are certainly curious about it. But if we just do a practice, I'll just do that
7:35
And then let's add the volume. ...red and green lines while looking through the device
7:41
Start by holding the device... So I'm actually going to step through this, because I've done this a bunch of times
7:47
But basically, you're going to do this, right? And then I'm going to adjust it until I can see both the red and green lines
7:59
So then on the bottom, there's a yes or no. So I'm going to say yes, and I'm going to do the same for my left eye
8:06
And I'm going to zip past their video tutorial. So now I'm ready to go
8:15
So we're starting with my right eye. Right, and that's pretty important
8:24
Don't close your other eye. Keep it open. And basically, I do this, orient my fingers on the three buttons
8:32
and then I see the red and green lines, approximately what you're seeing in the inset
8:39
And then I'm adjusting with the buttons to get it to line up
8:44
Once it looks like it's just solid yellow, I then push the third button, and..
8:53
Oh, I have to tap the screen. Then I can do... So now, it is good
9:04
Okay, so we're ready to go. So I'm on the next position
9:08
and then I just do the same thing for all the different angles. So I know, not super exciting watching me take the test
9:16
but lots of great, positive feedback. So suffice to say, that's all you do
9:25
It's actually pretty darn easy. You go through the process, and you use each of those tests
9:32
and you just, you know, line up the red and the green until you have yellow, and then you push the third button
9:38
the one closest to the screen. You go to the next one, you go to the next one
9:43
and when you're done, you can opt to save it, or you can say, you know, I have allergies today
9:49
or I don't feel well, or it's really dry in the house
9:53
and my eyes are really dry, and I don't feel like I'm getting good results
9:57
And you can just say, I'm going to discard this, and I'll come back later. Or you can do what I'm doing, which is just a practice
10:03
And I would highly recommend you do at least one practice set
10:07
for both eyes, all the way around, so you get the hang of how it works
10:11
Really, the biggest challenge I had was not having my hand in the way
10:16
of my other eye, so that I couldn't focus on anything. And that's something where you just sort of get the hang of how to hold it
10:23
so that your other eye has free vision, and that's all there is
10:27
You go through the tests, you save everything. Once you've done it three times, you get all the results
10:33
This is really a remarkable piece of technology. Like I said, it's an automated refraction test
10:39
and it is very similar to what you would have at the ophthalmologist, optician
10:45
I'm not sure how they all differentiate, but when you go to the eye doc
10:49
and you want to get a prescription, they use a very similar device
10:53
This is the home version of that. How amazing, really. So, really, the only thing left to talk about is the price
11:00
But before we get to the price of this and I wrap up, let me ask if you can subscribe to my channel
11:06
I really appreciate it. I get a lot of gear. IQ sent me this so I could test it out and try it
11:11
Thanks so much. Super interesting. So please subscribe to my channel, and I will give you the straight scoop on everything
11:18
So, totally worthwhile. Now, this device and everything in the box, the whole package deal
11:26
is the IQ VisionCheck system, and it is $69 at IQ.com. Yes, you heard me. $69. Gets you the whole setup
11:37
So now you can see, if you do have to pay an additional $4.99 for another family member
11:43
then it's really not that big a deal, even if you and your spouse and grandma and grandpa and uncle Joe all use this device
11:53
And everyone has to get a subscription except for the first person. That's still less than one visit to the eye doc
11:59
So, really amazing. I am really pretty impressed by this technology. And not only that, but this is the second generation of this device
12:07
So they've already gone through a lot of engineering refinement, and the whole system with all the video tutorials and the audio prompts and everything
12:15
I guarantee you'll be able to do it. This is really straightforward
12:19
Run a couple of tests and practices, and you will be getting some really good results
12:24
and you'll be testing your vision at home anytime you want. Amazing, really. So, I say definitely check this out
12:32
And with that, I'm going to get back and finish up my test, which means I need to put it back on my phone
12:37
And I'll catch you in my next video. Go to Beadaholique.com for all of your beading supply needs
